HELP! Ucs, USC, Stern, Georgetown and more

Hey

My grades have been getting pretty bad and after the college results from my school this year I am petrified about my college..future. ( A student in my schools senior class had a 3.8 uw 4.2 W (max is out of 4.36 for my school 0.o) 2230 SAT and he was the president of an initiative which raised close to 70 000 dollars for a school in Chile and he ended up getting rejected from UCSD, UCLA and UC Berk as well as all the privates. He is now going to UC Irvine, which is a great school, but at the level of schools I thought he would end up at)

My "stats"

Race: Indian
State: California (instate for the UCs)
Fin Aid: Need it (very average household income not rich but not poor)
High School Type: Competitive Public School

Schedule: Will take 6 out of the 8 offered APs in my school ( all the other APs are like Art and language). I was the only sophomore in my class who was in a math course higher than pre-calc honors ( I took Calc BC). My senior year schedule includes
AP lit
AP bio
AP econ
Hooks: NONE..second generation college attendee, Asian..all that fun stuff

GPAs
UW GPA: 3.8
WGPA: 4.23
UCGPA: 4.18

TROUBLE: My gpa has a horrific downward trend!
Freshman: 4.0 both semesters
Sophomore: 1 B first semester; 4.0 second semester
Junior year: FOUR Bs first semester; Straight As as of now (will stay the same because the majority of my classes are APs and after AP testing which is this week we no longer receive points towards the class)

Through a small quirk in my school's policy if I receive a 5 on the respective AP, two of my Bs from first semester will change into As. As a result, in the best of scenarios, my GPA will be able to get to a 3.92 ish. How do you think my changes would improve with this GPA?

TESTING

W:700
Cr:730p
Total:2200

SAT II

Colleges!
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC San Diego
UC Los Angeles
UC Berkeley
USC
NYU stern
Georgetown (International Health not SFS)
Cornell
UConn 8 year med
Drexel 8 year med
USC/Keck 8 year med

PLEASE tell me which schools I have an actual chance of getting in ( in, safety, match ect). Also if you would recommend applying to one of them EA please tell me as well. As of now ( and I hope this does not come off as arrogant) I think I might feel a bit let down if I attended any school "under" (pardon the cockiness) UCLA.

My largest concern in this whole matter is the effect of my GPA and its downward trend. I know schools hate students with a bad trend and I honestly dont have any excuse (divorce moving ect) for my grades other than the fact my classes were really hard and I did not put in as much effort as I needed to have. Any opinions regarded the extent to which they will scare colleges away?

buuuuuuumppp!!

You definitely have a chance at ALL of these schools. Don’t let the fact that one kid got rejected from these schools discourage you. In fact, some of these schools look like safeties for you (Drexel, UConn).

If you don’t apply at all, you will definitely not get in. So give it a shot! I think you will be surprised – your stats are better than you think!

Not really^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 8 yr. med programs are a lot tougher, and often their bare admission criteria cancel out alot of applicants (must be 5-10% of class, certain GPA’s).
But he’s right, don’t get discouraged, perhaps his reccs weren’t that great or his essay seemed written by a 4 yr. old.
UC Davis- Not too sure, but instate helps, and pretty good chance
UC Irvine- same
UC San Diego- Pretty good shot
UC Los Angeles- this is more or less a crapshot for everyone, I can’t say your the best of their applicants, but definately a median canidate
UC Berkeley- same, but even more of a crap shot
USC- same, but a bit less of a crap shot than UCLA (lotta crap here, lol)
NYU stern- Well FBLA and stuff helps, stats aren’t so bad, so good chance here too
Georgetown (International Health not SFS)- pretty good chance
Cornell- Same as UCLA
UConn 8 year med- don’t know too much about this in particular, but like i said, these guys undergo seizures as they go through the high school apps, just plain strange. Though I’d suggest writing an essay about how volunteering at the hospital u saw a kid smiling at a doctor and now u wanna be that doctor.
Drexel 8 year med- same
USC/Keck 8 year med- same, maybe a little harder, if u even can apply for this and normal USC

hmm your GPA trend is probably goingta be a problem
sorry to be a bummer but every thing better than ucsd is at the very least a low reach

Your right but he does have good SAT’s and SAT II’s, pretty good EC’s, and he claims to be devoted so good essay material.

And since when is 3.8 that baadd of a GPA? It’s not Harvard he’s applying too

thanks for the input so far! any one else? Also if there are any ba/md know it alls out there if you could throw some more program names my way (programs you think I have a shot at) id appreciate it thanks

Lol, as a matter of fact, I used to be obssesed with med school stuff =D

[BA/MD School Listing - Medical and Dental School Help](http://www.medicalhelpnet.com/content/view/28/46/)
^^^^ Good list of programs with basic info and requirements

Top of my head I know of UMDNJ’s program, Drexel’s program, Rice Univ.'s program. Though often times they force you to go to… less desirable colleges (like Monteclair State. Univ. for UMDNJ).

For that, stuff like Hospital Auxilary, and shift leader are impressive. I’d utilize the summer and do a research internship in biomed to supplement all that (at least that’s what normal college students headed to med school do)

thanks so much for the link there are tons of good programs there! anyone else want to chance me on schools?

I’d like to point out that the acceptance rate in Georgetown between SFS and International Health Studies is not very significant (about 1-2%)

^ Really? In the online “Hoya” (the schools newspaper) I read that it was more like 17% SFS and 21-22% NHS. Though your point is still valid, 5% more in admissions is still moderately significant. The reason I made a point to include “not sfs” is that SFS is seemingly synonymous with G’town and I wanted to point out it was not the major I planned on applying to. Thanks for the input though. Anyone else have any opinions on my chances?

UC Davis - low reach
UC Irvine - match
UC San Diego - match
UC Los Angeles - low reach
UC Berkeley - reach
USC - low reach
NYU stern - low reach
Georgetown (International Health not SFS) - high match
Cornell - reach
UConn 8 year med - not sure
Drexel 8 year med - match
USC/Keck 8 year med - not sure

I have no idea where the person above me is getting his chances from. UCSD is a match and UC davis is a reach? come on if you dont know about the schools dont chance them. As for me Id say the schools you may not get into are: Berkeley, Georgetown, Cornell, Uconn 8 year and USC/Keck. Other than that you shooould be in everywhere else

bummmppppp!!!

buuumpp pleaseeee

I must be missing something, four of your choices seem to be specifically oriented to health/medicine majors, why is NYU Stern School of Business on your list?

As has been mentioned, combined undergrad/med school programs are extremely competitive. In that light your safety schools of UConn and Drexel don’t really qualify as safeties. I’d consider dropping the attempts at the combined programs unless these schools will still accept you as an undergrad even if they don’t accept you for the med school tracks.

You have a strong GPA with a “pothole” during first semester junior year and you don’t tell us what your SAT/ACT scores were.

My feelings are that you have a strong GPA with one (hardly) “bad” stretch. Assuming you do well on you SATs I think you have a decent chance at most of your schools. Though UCLA, Berkeley, Georgetown and Cornell are going to be reaches in the best of circumstances. In my opinion USC, Drexel and UConn are reaches as well if you insist on the combined programs. As mentioned before, NYU-Stern is an outlier, regardless, statistically it’s a reach for many students. A few true safeties may be in order.

hmmm I think you may have missed my SAT score but just in case
Math 770
CR 730
W 700 E:12
And as for the Stern it seems odd but my goal is to get an MD MBA. Usually people get the MD first and then the MBA or they do a combined program but it is possible to go through stern and get an undergrad in business and then do an MD MBA after or at least so I have been told. Though I, along with most others who have posted, agree with most of your ratings USC and NYU stern seem to be a bit off. I live and california and have a lot of respect for USC as an institution ( if i didnt I would not be applying) but I never saw it as a reach before (generally it has been a match-high match). Any reasons why it is a reach in your opinion? The same would go for Stern. Thanks for your opinions though

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2009.pdf

Obviously these are averages; a visit to the USC accepted/denied thread here on CC shows some applicants with higher stats being rejected and others with lower stats being accepted. I don’t think that USC is a reach for you in general, your profile has an “average” GPA for the admitted class of 2009 along with a 70th%-tile SAT, but as your current classmate found out the hard way, having an average profile at a competitive school doesn’t mean it’s a match.

One of your options is USC/Keck along with Drexel and UConn combined undergrad/medical school programs. It stands to reason that admission into these programs will be even more demanding therefore I see Keck as a reach.

As far as NYU

[New York University: Undergraduate Profile ? BusinessWeek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

The b-school admitted 23% of applicants, 57% of whom had 3.75 GPAs or better and a median CR+M SATs of 1450. In short, your very strong profile is “average” for NYU Stern. To my way of thinking any time you apply to a school with an admit rate of less than 25%, all your stats need to be at the 75th%-tile in order to consider it a match. As far as an MD/MBA, my personal belief is that if you attend an upper level undergraduate business school, an MBA is a waste of time and money. So my suggestion to you is to concentrate on doing the things necessary to get into a good medical school. You might want to consider applying to a couple of business schools and using your electives to fulfill the science requirements needed for med school, thereby accomplishing the goal you’re striving for.

Let’s go UCS.
You say you took 6/8 APS, but you only list 3 tests. Not taking some of the tests may hurt you. Your SATs are great.

If that’s your projected senior year schedule, you had better add some classes to it. Taking 3 classes (3 /4 periods because of bio) makes you look lazy.

The GPA is fine.

UC Davis - Match
UC Irvine - Match
UC San Diego - Match
UC Los Angeles - Low reach
UC Berkeley - Low reach
USC - Slight reach
NYU stern - Low Reach
Cornell - Reach

gl

It looks like i worded my schedule incorrectly. My schedule includeess those three classes. I will be taking 7 periods my senior year ( ap bio ap lit gov/AP econ ap spanish international business Calculus D and one “period” of ASB. As for the APs I meant that would have taken seven APs by the time I graduate ( calc bc chem bio statistics lit econ gov (self study)). Sorry for the confusion could you try chancing me again with this information? thanks so much you guys.
