Help understanding CS degree plan

I’m looking ahead to see which are the best AP classes for DS next year. He thinks he might want to major in CS or CE at UTD. According to UTD’s web site they award credit for a score of 4 or more on the AP CAL BC exam for Math 2413 and Math 2414.

Looking at the degree plan

https://catalog.utdallas.edu/2016/undergraduate/programs/ecs/computer-science

under II. Major requirements MATH 2419 Calculus II OR MATH 2414 Integral Calculus

But under I. Core Curriculum Component Area it list MATH 2419 but does not list “OR Math 2414”

Is this a just typo? Seems odd to allow the substitution in one area and not the other and both areas say Math 2413 OR Math 2417

Also are some of the classes listed under Major Preparatory Courses 20 semester credit hours… optional? I count 35 credits worth of classes listed.

For CS, the students need 2413 and 2414. If they get a 4 or higher on the calc BC exam, they are done with calculus. For CE, there is an additional class 2415, or 2417 plus 2419 can replace 2413, 2414 and 2415. I found this information on the CS undergrad advising page for math placement.

Some of the classes are duplicates between core curr and major requirements. Both the calculus and physics classes are listed in both sections. I’m actually coming up with 16 hours being duplicated vs 15.

@GTAustin, Thanks Please don’t trust my math! This stuff is making me a bit loopy looking at it all! I think that with “fast track” that DS may be able to complete a his BS in either CS or CE and masters in 8 semesters.

My DD is thinking something similar. She is coming in with 27 AP hours and is thinking she will do 18 hrs/semester leaving her with a lot of extra time. She thinks she might even be able to pull off an art minor. Even if it took an extra semester, it is definitely worth pursuing. because of the difference in earnings right off the bat.

@GTAustin those AP credits really help! My DS is considering a minor in Chinese.

Do you happen to know how they handle the GRE for students that are participating in the Fast Track program?

:slight_smile: Following both of you.

@3scoutsmom no GRE necessary. http://ce.utdallas.edu/undergraduate/fasttrack.html

Thank you @getoveritnow that link was very helpful! It mentioned that there was no minimum course load required for graduate students, do you happen to know what the recommended course load is? I was thinking maybe 9 credits?

Graduate recommended course load depends on the major and the sometimes the program within the major, and sometimes even particular semester within the program. Nonetheless, full time for graduate students is 9 hours for Fall and Spring, and 6 for Summer.
