Hello Friends,
So I am a New Jersey Resident and I thought going to Rutgers will be a good idea since its the cheapest option. However, it turns out that due to my financial standings I will probably not get financial aid. My dad is the only one that works and although we are well off, even rutgers seems expensive with no aid.
I want to apply to colleges that will give me a full ride given my act score. Here’s my list of colleges so far:
Rutgers University
-The College of New Jersey
-Johns Hopkins University (just for the heck of it)
I participate in many extracurricular activities and go to a well ranked and known high school.
My ACT SCORES:
COMPOSITE: 32
English: 33
Math: 32
Reading: 33
Science: 30
Writing: 36
After lurking around CC and college websites, I decided on applying to:
-Howard University
-Fairleigh Dickinsion University
WHAT SHOULD I DO?? LOL gotta love college fees! What colleges should I apply to that will give me a full ride scholarship given my ACT score? The max I can spend without stressing my dad would be about 15,000$ a year.
Thank you for helping out a stressed senior!! Can't thank you enough!
A diploma from a state flagship will be sufficient to get you into medical school or other grad programs if you do well academically. My Rutgers degree got me admission to grad programs at UC Berkeley, U of Wisconsin, Cornell and Johns Hopkings, the latter two with full funding.
Looks like you are a senior. You have a 4.2 weighted GPA, and a 32 ACT.
You could get full tuition at University if Alabama Huntsville…and it’s a good place to study…fine for premed. You woild have to pay room and board…but that’s cheaper than these other schools on your list.
And this from you too:
Your family income is a little more than $100,000 a year. It doesn’t matter that only one parent works…that is your family income. Did you change your ED application to RD at JHU?
This would be after two FREE years of community college.
Why would you think this would compromise your chances of getting into medical school? What you need for that is a terrific MCAT score and a terrific GPA. Your degree will be from Rutgers if you go this route.
You could get a full tuition at Temple if your unweighted core classes are at least 3.8. Room board and expenses would still tin you about $17,000. Just curious, how come this revelation came so late? Did u apply to Rutgers by December 1, have you been accepted yet? You can probably get $3500 there bringing you down to atound. $23,500. With your parents $15000 and your own direct loan of $5,500, and then work to earn the additional $3000? It seems doable.
Thanks Everyone! Yes I am senor and unfortunately until now I always thought I would be able to go to Rutgers. I missed the University of Alabama deadline but I am looking into other schools too. I have already been accepted to Rutgers and applied before Dec. 1st. And I withdrew my ED to JHU and changed it to RD.
I know Community College won’t be the end but it will definitely be an experience different from a university. This route is still an option but I am now looking at colleges that offer full rides given my act score.
UAH and UAB are both still awarding merit (you can happily ignore that Dec 1st deadline), so apply to BOTH. Since you want to go to med school, UAB would be the better choice of the two.
As for Alabama…send me a PM and perhaps I can help you get the full tuition award from Bama, even tho you’re beyond the date.
The CC to BS to MD route isn’t the best, no matter what some might say.
There are med schools that will not accept CC premed prereqs or they will view them as being “lesser.”
Also, if you did the CC to BS route, you would not likely be able to apply to med schools after junior year (the traditional application time) because you wouldn’t be at your transfer univ long enough. CC to BS to MD students tend to have to take a Gap Year, which may not be something that you’d want to do.
You’re also from the NE/mid-Atlantic area, which is more competitive for MD admissions, so avoiding any possible negatives to your med school app is important.
