help with act studying.

I'm starting to prep for the ACT, which I plan to take for the first time in April, and as silly as it sounds, I'm not sure exactly how to approach studying for this particular exam. I currently own the red book, PR's Cracking the ACT, and PR's 1296. I also may get Barron's ACT 36 later. I'm hoping for at least a 30; I'm currently floating about 25. Right now, I'm just reading the books, tackling one section a day, then practicing questions that pertain to that part of the test then reviewing what I got wrong and why. I aim to get more accurate before I work on my speed. I plan on taking one full length practice test every week and maybe a bit more as the exam date approaches.

I know studying methods are subjective and should be fine tuned to the individual studying, but I'm just curious, is this an okay study plan ? Anything else I should do or change ? I've self studied before for regular class tests and regents style exams, but never something like this, so I'm not exactly 100% confident in my methods atm.

How did / are you prepping ? Any advice for a novice like me with substantially mediocre scores compared to other CC'ers ?

How can I stay focused on reading up on the material ? I'd really like to go through all the available information in my books so that I'm confident and familiar with all the concepts, but these books aren't exactly what I call page turners.

Are prep classes really worth it ? My parents have no issues enrolling me in one (particularly Kaplan), but I'm not sure I'd really enjoy the extra workload on top of my regular classes, self studying, and extra curricular activities. I've heard a bit more backlash on these courses than miracle score raising stories, so I'm a little skeptical. I'd hate for my parents to spend so much money if it isn't worth it. Thoughts ?

Thanks in advance ! (:

I took a Sylvan class for 10 saturdays in a row. It did not help me. I got a 22!

Now I study on my own, doing one section per night and a full test on the weekends.

I time myself, something Sylvan never did!

I review only what I got wrong.

When I finished the Red Real ACT book, I moved on to PR 1296 questions. PR is much harder.

I am trying again in Feb, hoping for a 30, but realistically I will get a 28 or so. I need a 30.

Good luck!

Don’t read anything from those review books. Instead, do practice questions from those books, review your incorrect answers, and then read up on the topics of your incorrect answers.

Thanks for both your responses!
