Helpful Threads Favor

Hi guys, I have a favor to ask that I think will help all of us in the future. I noticed, as I am sure you have, that we get asked the same questions (such as about Notre Dame and medical school) again and again. Because of that, I want to get together a list of links to the very best threads on those topics so that I can then put those links on my website and we can refer people to those links. I just know, speaking for myself, I have no problem with people asking these questions (I am glad they are) but sometimes my responses are better than others depending on what I have going on. Also, some threads are better than others because in some we may have posters like Nemo who are in the know and they may not be on the boards right now.

Anyways, what do you guys think, good idea? I am going to try to go through all the posts I can today so that I can find as many as I can and I will post them in this thread so you can see them. If you have some time and you know of any threads that were especially helpful to you, please post them in this thread and I will look at them. Hopefully we can come up with a good list of threads so we can help others as efficiently as possible and also spare some time (which is big for me as I have to apply to graduate school next year and it will cut down my time on here)!

Thanks in advance guys, and if you have comments on my plan please let me know. I am not trying to stop people from asking specific questions if they need help, that will never bother me, but rather just trying to give them the best information and possibly cut down a bit on repeat questions.

Here are the links I have found (there are lots). Let me know what you think and if you have any to add. Basically I went back until November because I feared that further back may provide too dated of information.

Good list!

Irish, that is an amazing list. Thanks for all your patience answering and organizing all this info.

I am a mom, with a question.
We just got the info about the laundry service at ND, and it seems like a great service.
I remember having this my freshman year for linens/ towels, and it was great. Only downside was that we had to be a the dorm during the two hours the service was there delivering the laundered items.

So is there any downside to this that I am not realizing? Do many kids use this service?
And, how about those$19.00 knit sheets that come with free laundering all year.!!!
Excited mom here in South Jersey, awaiting your savvy advice :)

I will be quite honest with this, it is a great deal if your parents are willing to pay for it :). It is very convenient, especially for ROTC kids because they do all of the ironing and folding properly so you don't have to worry about it. However, while it is very convenient, I can't justify the price. It costs $190 a semester. Last year, doing my laundry on my own cost me only about $50 so that is quite a difference. Probably about 10% of my dorm uses the service, so it is used, but most of us just do our own laundry.

If you are still interested in it, you guys can always try it for the first semester and see how it goes. I just can't justify it personally, but then again it would be me that writes the check. One thing you could ask your child is if they would be willing to pay the cost for the service, and if so, then perhaps it has enough value to them to make it worthwhile, you know? I hope that helps!

Yeah, St. Michael's laundry isn't really worth it unless you get it free for being either an athlete or an RA. Let him or her "experience living on his own" by doing his or her own laundry. That's all I've done. It's not bad and at least you can get the laundry done whenever you want instead of wait for the St. Michael's van to stop by once a week.

Thanks so much blammm, and Irish. The thought of son having clean sheets, towels before mildew sets in, made my day yesterday. Not to mention wrinkle free clothes!

I recall my freshman year, having to be at the dorm during very limited hours to pick up the towels/ linen service, and it wasn't always convenient. I was wondering if this is a problem, being in a class across campus and having to rush back to pick up the laundry.
I will call St Michaels to find out if that is even an issue.

Will give it more thought....and, will definitely do first semester, if at all.
Thanks for your input !

I don't think that is an issue, you just leave your bag downstairs in your dorm on your assigned morning and then they deliver it back to your dorm so it doesn't get much easier!

We bought it for our son for his first year. He really liked it, except for the occasional lost item. He requested doing his own his second year (and third, and now fourth), and we happily obliged. But I think it a real advantage for the freshman year. There are many adjustments to college life, and I liked the fact that he didn't have to think about washing his clothes, towels, and especially sheets haha. He liked the convenience, and I don't think he had to be around to wait for his clean clothes to be delivered.

Special thanks Docmom for your view. I,too, am thinking it might be mostly a Freshman year thing, and that would be fine. I agree, let's ease into keeping clothes clean and reasonably wrinkle free. Good to know pick up / delivery isn't an issue.
Thanks so much....

Irish,

We should request that this thread gets pinned to the top of the ND section to make it easy for new-comers to find.

I agree but I don't know how to get them to do that. Any ideas? If not, I can post it on my website, I just haven't had the time to do it!

I suggest sending an email to the moderator or perhaps Roger Dooley . . . it seems like a lot of the boards have pinned threads. Though we may want to ask to have the thread renamed to something like "To all who enter, start here first".
