Helping your college freshman move in to their dorm. Who is not doing it?

@HappyFace2018 I just cried a little too. It makes me happy when people are kind.

When my sweet girl travels to/from DC by plane on holidays and Spring break I’m gonna need some drugs to keep me calm :frowning:

When we relocated from Georgia to Virginia my hubby became a stay at home dad (our sweet girl was in the 2nd grade). She attended Flint Hill Schools in Oakton, VA and initially took the school bus to school each day (my hubby put her on the school bus at the scheduled pick up/drop off at the local library.

She took the bus until one day my hubby called me frantic because he was at the library at the regular pickup time and no sweet girl. He was a complete mess.

The first thing I did was call her on her cell phone (yup…a second grader with a cell phone). She had a Verizon cellphone with four buttons (one to call mommy, one to call daddy, one to call grandma and one to call 911). It was a little green flip phone which actually looked like a frog and it had a GPS tracker. I immediately got on the computer to track the phone and saw she was not where she was suppose to be. I calmed myself.

When she answered the phone I said “hey sugar plum where are you?” Her sweet little voice said “I don’t know momma…I’m the only one on the school bus today”. I can’t tell you how sick I felt at that moment. While I had her on the phone attempting to be as calm as possible, I dialed the school transportation office.

As I spoke to the school dispatcher and told them that the driver was not on the route, my child was the only one on the bus and she had no idea where she was. The dispatcher immediately put the phone down (without putting me on hold) and radioed the driver with “where the hell are you right this very moment!” The driver said “well, I only have one child on the bus so I decided to go a different way which has taken me longer” (Alexandria just outside of DC). The dispatcher said “well the mother has you on GPS and the parents are worried sick because their child has not been dropped off at the appropriate location…you will never deviate from the route…this is the reason why we have the route because if something occurs we know where you are!” When the driver finally got to the drop off point he was afraid to open the door because by this time several people who were in the library came out and overheard our angst and were consoling us. As the door opened someone from the crowd just told the bus driver to let our sweet girl off and drive away. He did. As she got off the bus everyone attempted to not let her see our angst by saying “Surprise! We came to surprise you with your mom and dad!” I turned around to see an older gent hugging his wife just balling!

She never got back on the bus…we don’t like school buses

She’s been on several foreign exchange trips but always with a group of kids…never traveled by herself. God help me. :-S
