Helppppppppppppppppp!

hi, i'm an international student from korea. i have been living as a permanent resident (my mom is a student here) for three years in virginia.

when i apply to college, will i be an international student competing against international people? or will i be a resident in virginia? if i wanted to apply for uva, do i get any benefits in admission? PLEASE HELP! thank you(:

If you are a permanent resident, you would not be considered an international applicant. (“Permanent residence” refers to a legal immigration status, not the length of time you have been in the US.) Permanent residents are treated like US citizens in most regards when it comes to college admissions: you are eligible to apply for federal financial aid, you might be eligible for in-state tuition rates, etc.

You have to check UVA’s policies to see if you would qualify for in-state tuition. UVA follows the domicile guidelines of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia, which you can find here: [Domicile Guidelines](http://www.schev.edu/Students/VAdomicileguidelines.asp?from=adminfaculty). Pay special attention to Addendum A, which explains the eligibility of various aliens to establish state residency for tuition purposes.

If you have any questions about the impact of your legal status on college admissions or your eligibility for in-state tuition rates or financial aid, talk to the admissions office of UVA or your guidance counselor.
