Hey, newbie here hoping to transfer after a year in CC. Help is much appreciated!

So I guess I should explain the situation I'm in.

I'm a high school senior who applied to 8 schools (UCLA, UCD, UCSB, UCSC, UCB, UCSD, USC, and Stanford), and I got accepted to only UCSB, UCSC, and UCD.

My two dream schools are USC and Cal (both for business), and from my options I'd take Santa Barbara, but the thing is, I hear that UC transfers have a less than 5% acceptance rate for transfering to other schools.

So I'm now considering going to CC in the Bay Area (maybe become apart of some local transfer program to Cal, these exist right?) and am committed to working really hard for a year or two to transfer to Berkeley or USC.

So I have a couple of questions.
1. Is this a good idea? I know that I'm going to get involved in whatever honors program that my cc will have/offer. Plus, I know that I will get insanely involved in school activites/ hold a job outside of school.
2. Do I have a better chance of transfering to Cal if I go to CC in the Bay area? Will me being in the Bay are are have any effect on my transfering to USC (I figure not, since USC is a private).
3. How will I know which classes will make me the most competitive for my major? Should I talk to the counselor at my future cc?
4. Are there any general programs that you guys know about that I should research that will help my transfer rate to these two schools?

Thank you guys so much, it means alot to me. This month has been a tough time for me, especially when I'm watching all of my friends go to great schools. -_-

Any response is MUCH appreciated.

By the way, does anyone know any great CC in the Bay area with great transfer rates that I can research?

Thanks!

There is no guarentee transfer program to UC Berkeley or UCLA. The only transfer guarentee programs (TAG) available are for UCSD, UCI, UCR, UCSB, UCD, UCSC, and UCM. UC Berkeley Haas School of Business is one of the most competitive to transfer into which holds a 7% transfer rate (23% for people that are actually eligible to apply).

For the transfer rate for UC to UC, it is much harder since priority transfer admission is given to California Community College students. There is also no such thing as transferring out of CC from one year to UC Berkeley Haas. Unless you manage to fulfill all the prereqs and the minimum 60 transferrable units prior to being admitted which is a load of work.

It is a good idea to join an honors program (gives you a transcript notification depending on which honors program your school has) and also join various volunteering activities or clubs or job. But only do these if you know you can handle it with your workload.

No, you won’t have an advantage over other Community College students since transfer priority is given to all California Community College students. It will not effect your transferring to USC either. But USC does somewhat take into consideration how rigirous your current college is when admission decisions are done.

Ask your counselor or google research it.

UC Berkeley mentorship or something like that. Some people might say TAP but that is only for certain colleges and is not affiliated with UC Berkeley.

I’m a Business Administration major and I’ll be applying for Fall 10’ to USC Marshall as well as other colleges. I do loads of community service, hold a part time job, part of other clubs holding commitee positions, but I have a current 3.68 GPA. I will be finished with all of USC Marshall prereqs this year (1st year at Community College) and will take the recommended as well as other prereqs for the other colleges I’ll be applying to.

Thanks for enlightening me MakeBank24. Were you able to us any AP credit at community to help you with any college credit?

Also, I’m considering City College of San Francisco in the Bay area. Has anyone that lives up north heard any success stories from this school? It looks like a decent school to me with a nice honors program.

Yes, I was able to use AP credit for Biology, Art History, and Statistics.

if you go to a community college they have agreements with schools some community colleged even have agreements with ucla that you are automatically excepted if you are in the honors program. same for usc. it all depends on the cc. The councilor will know all, just make sure to talk with an honors councilor cause all the other ones usually dont know much more than you will.

billow007 - wrong, get your facts straight. California Community Colleges have agreements with most UC’s except UCLA and UC Berkeley. This is because UCLA and UC Berkeley are very competitive UC’s that don’t condone guarentee admissions. There are honor programs like TAP for UCLA and UC Berkeley Mentorship to help boost your chances of being admitted to those competitive schools. If there were TAG programs for UC Berkeley and UCLA, I would be doing it right now and so would loads of people in the UC transfer threads.

Also it is not the same for USC. I go to Pasadena City College which is the one of the top 5 community colleges that transfer to USC. There is no such thing as a guarentee program or honors program that gives guarenteed or an advantage in admissions to USC.

, na u are a little off. Certain schools do have agreements with ucla as long as you are in honors. for example to back me up chaffey college in rancho cucamonga has this agreement.

or maybe it is not guaranteed per say, but you will get in as long as your an honor student and your gpa is high

billow007 - like I said previously, you are wrong. I’ve explained on my previous post that UCLA has an honors program called TAP and UC Berkeley Mentorship. But what you had said was automatic acceptance in your first post, which is not done with UCLA and UC Berkeley. TAG (Transfer Admission Guarentee) is done by the other UC’s such as UCSD, UCI, UCR, UCSB, UCD, UCSC, and UCM.

Even with a high GPA and TAP you still may not be able to get into your desired school depending on how selective it is. I’ve heard of 3.9’s with TAP being denied for UCLA Business Economics before.

There’s no such thing as guaranteed acceptance for UCLA lol it’s just that many of the people in TAP DO get in. It’s never guaranteed though hahaha. If there was a TAG system with UCLA in a particular CC everyone would go there.
