Hey there, fellow Hendrix shoppers ...

Rep: Fred Baker.

I'm pretty sure.....

LOL, I guess I didn't make myself clear...what is Hendrix's reputation in Arkansas?

Thanks to all of you for making me feel better. I do have plans to let the admin office know about it, after we hear about the Hays. I think there might be better choices for chauffeurs. To make it even worse, if you can imagine, he told her she was going to be late for the dinner anyhow so he was going to do some errands on their way to Conway. So she got there 10 minutes before dinner ended and people had already introduced themselves.

If Hendrix was a larger school, I don't think his comments would have gotten to her, but as small as it is, it made her wonder if it was more of the campus culture than she imagined and would be hard to avoid. Unfortunately, he was the same one who drove her BACK to the airport, UGH.

She had thought they were going to let them know about Hays by the end of the week, but guess not. She had also applied for several other scholarships, and we haven't heard about any of those yet either.

She took a look at the dorm descriptions and thought Galloway would definitely be her choice. She's fun loving, but also very serious about academics.

Again, thanks for the support.

Oh.....the reputation.....lol.

Well, it varies depending on who you speak to of course.

Without a doubt, it's the most challenging and intellectual college in Arkansas (for the fields it offers)..... It has a reputation for being pretty liberal, but that seems to go with most top ranked colleges (my bias). It's a very open-minded college from what I've heard....I believe it was ranked one of the best colleges in openness to gays (I'm not sure if that floats your boat).

Gah....my post is so convoluted.....but it's a lazy saturday and I don't really feel like worrying about grammar....

As for the partying scene, I have heard some stuff that has worried me too. Like everyone earlier said ...you can find drugs on any campus. I know at least person who went there is an active druggie.

And I agree with you guys, that's really not the type of person I want to be around....

Texasmom, here's what comes to mind when I think of Hendrix:
1. excellent academics
2. students who are very smart but not snobs about it
3. liberal-leaning, but open-minded enough to accept everyone's opinions (even if they're conservative <g>)
4. professors who relate to students as individuals</g>

Hendrix's reputation in Arkansas is unsurpassed as far as how well it is thought of academically. It is the only AR school that my dd (currently a HS Jr.) is seriously considering.

BTW, I did not go to Hendrix, but I wish I had!

Thanks johnnydr87 and ArkansasMom, your insights help!

Anyone else out there heard anything from Hendrix?

I thought they said they were going to try and notify by end of the week?

According to an earliest post on this thread, froho got the call on Thursday that he was not a Hays recipient. Another friend told me they were notified of non-winner status, too. Maybe we'll hear something tomorrow. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's good news!

I haven't heard anything yet.

Nothing here either.

We still haven't heard anything, which doesn't bode well.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw that a new message had been posted. We haven't heard anything, either, which I originally thought could be good since a couple of people had heard early that they didn't get it. Now I'm just feeling nervous and anxious ... waiting for the axe to drop. Surely we'll hear something soon.

Cheer up and hang in there - no news, while anxiety-inducing, is better than bad news [like I got]. Maybe y'all are on a 'wait' list.
Anyway, does anyone know when they're sending out the need-based aid offers?

My sentiments exactly! I could barely breath by the end of last week. Now with each passing day I get more nervous. D has been busy making up 7 exams missed during 6 days of absences over a 2 week period. Grades have to be in by Friday the 10th as it's the end of the grading period before Spring Break. She hasn't the time to worry about much else. In that respect, she's lucky!

D called and said we got a letter today saying that she didn't get the Hays. Fortunately, other scholarships will cover the same amount, but she really wanted the Hays. Good luck to everyone else.

I mostly hear people mention that Hendrix is where AR's smarter kids tend to go.

Even at schools like Harvard people smoke weed and drink. It happens. If you are not into it do not hang around the people who do it. It's simple. Belittling those who let loose on the weekends in a different way than your daughter does serves no purpose. However, I do agree this guy was probably trying to "show off".

I rather get tired of the "perfect fit" people tend idealize about when they are choosing a college. If finances work out, and the school has a rep of getting people into good jobs and grad schools then that should really be what is considered. If you are lucky enough to get some good school offers then you really have some decisions on your hands... but this superficial bs of a drug atmosphere your daughter/you are concerned about is ridiculuous.

I just got home from a meeting and dd just got home from tutoring at an elementary school. According to Caller ID, Hendrix tried to call at 4:35 but we weren't here. WAH!!!!! I do hope they try back this evening. Of course if we don't answer the phone, we can't hear bad news, right?

Ok let me get this straight...some of the participants received calls that they didn't receive the Hays and others just got a letter??? Hummm...so if they aren't calling we just need to check the mailbox. UGG! This is harder on the parents than on the kids! Guess we all need to relax and enjoy the last few months of senior year with our kids...and figure out how to finance their educations in April!

As Tom Petty sings, "The waiting is the hardest part". We missed a call from Hendrix, so hopefully they'll try back today. We aren't necessarily expecting good news, but in this case, some news is better than no news. At least then I'll be able to stop obsessing about it.

Got the skinny envelope in today's mail. No to Hays. Thought D had a really good shot at that one. Hays would have finalized the deal, too.

Back to comparison shopping. Now I see why the middle class winds up at state public schoos, which D strongly dislikes.

Oh well, still have 1 $$$ interview at SMU in 2 weeks.
