who is applying?

D has decided that Hendrix is just too good a school to not apply. She received some nice e-mails setting out the campus culture that made her feel way better and splashmom's D just loves it, so the app will be heading to Conway. Anybody else?

Curmudgeon, it's off my Son's radar screen for next year for a variety of reasons, but my niece (lives in Oklahoma) is definitely applying this year. I would say that it's a target/safety for her, but she definitely has some things in her background going for her. She's gonna need some decent $$ though -- merit or need.

Iderochi, this little school has something to appeal to a number of folks. It has been very generous to a kid on this board last year as a very late applicant and appears to spend the $ to get kids it wants. It has a totally unique beat to it that will appeal to some that can't find that beat in any other school in the south. And 1 in 10 Hendrix grads go to med school. Is that a stat or what (remembering my D is pre-med) ?

My son is applying as a safety school. His first choice is in the Pacific Northwest, but if he doesn't get into his dream school....Hendrix is definately in the running. I wish his other schools were as affordable as Hendrix.

im a student at hendrix if you have any questions

hey, valuable. Still liking Hendrix? Hendrix still loving you? Have you taught all the Arkansan's to say "you guys"?

How would you describe the political and social climate? D is an MOR, Christian but not preachy or intolerant as she has grown up around students of other faiths. Presently , she is devoutly anti-substances. Any chance of fitting in to the mix? We hear that Hendrix is very tolerant, but are they only tolerant of out of the mainstream or counter-culture life choices? She'd be uncomfortable in such an environment.

How are the female athletes (and athletes in general) treated by the rest of the student body? Thanks. Hendrix is moving up fast on her horizon after some encouraging contacts.

I am loving Hendrix! Yet, I haven't had any "you guys" converts. I would have to say we have a pretty good political mix here. Even though I would say it leans more liberal, there are definitely a good ammount of conservatives here. I think although Hendrix has a liberal feel, it doesn't change that alot of these kids come from conservative southern households. Socially there is a good mix of kids too. I know that there is drinking but we also have this group that just got approved funding called SSS "The Super Sober Society". They received a $7000 grant from the school to host all sorts events. In fact right now, Hardin (a male dorm) is hosting this thing like Woodstock, but called Hardstock. We have had bands playing non-stop for two days from all over Arkansas on campus (Jazz, Rock, Funk, etc.). Its been a lot of fun. Anytime during today I can go to the Burrow and hear live music yay! The SSS has a ton of people in it, so it isn't something unpopular to join around here. Instead of drinking, we have other events for the weekends like: "walk in movies" where the brickpit has kids with blankets and chairs watching the movie on a huge screen. We have tons of theme parties where people can get dressed up and go out even if you don't drink. We have poetry slams, second city comedy troop visited, umm I know in the spring our campus votes on what celebrity we want to visit campus and perform (I think we are leaning towards the rapper Nelly) I would have to say that the people that drink here are the same people all the time. By that I mean, this is a small school so you know who the "party people" are. I guess what I am trying to say is, any gossip you hear on campus is based around those people since they are the ones that put themselves in the social drinking spotlight. Other then that, people are always finding something to do, whether its a soccer game, cookout, movie, etc. Religiously, I think people here aren't "preachers" but there is a sense of religion on campus. Many people fall under "christian" but I have met people of every faith, even quite a few jews which I think would be rare for a Methodist school is AR. Athletes here are pretty popular. Hendrix may not have a football team, but a ton of students support our teams. Right now soccer just ended, but everytime they had a game people would bring blankets and pillows and cheer them on. The diving team is pretty popular, along with baseball and especially basketball. The girls softball team here is excellent. Even the dance team, dance ensemble, and volleyball teams have good turn outs. I think the campus respects athletes because this school is academically challenging and we know how hard it is to fit in practicing. Hendrix is a proud school. If you haven't visited already, you should tell your daughter to stay overnight and I would host for her! I promise that if your daughter came here, she would not feel out of place for not drinking. There are ton of people here who choose to stay sober and they haven't expressed any unhappiness. Hope that helps. If you have any more questiosn don't hesitate to ask :)

oh and I should mention that intramural frisbee, dodgeball, and volleyball are huge here! people get really into it. I was also thinking that last week, the Social Commitee ( SoCo) hosted this thing called SoCo54 (like the club)! We had cage dancers (students that volunteered), people walking around with trays of appetizers, and a VIP room. It was so much fun. That event was a no-cup policy which means no drinking and a ton of people showed. Just another example of people having fun without liquor in the picture.

Hendrix seems like a hidden jewel. My S just mailed in the supplement. Does anyone know how quickly they let you know about financial aid with the rolling admissions?

i found out within a day or two after acceptance

valuable1212, that sounds like lots of fun stuff to do to me. I am so glad you are happy. To Texasmom, valuable applied quite late in the process so our mileage will most likely vary.

Last year, my S got a scholarship notification within 2 weeks of acceptance. Then there is a scholarship interview in Feb for those wanting to go for the Hays Scholarship and there are a couple of other scholarships (look on website) that need application. You will most likely get applications with your first scholarship notification. Also, last year they gave an automatic $1000 in financial aid if you got your FAFSA in by a certain date!

The need based financial info of course came after the FAFSA was submitted (but pretty quickly as I recall).

Valuable --

It sounds like Hendrix has been a pretty good match for you. Just curious if you are still looking at transferring (and if so, why?).

im still looking to transfer because i want a larger language program..i havent decided where yet though..possibly closer to home because even though i absolutely love it here, its rough being far away

My DD has applied to Hendrix, too. Hopefully she'll get her letter soon and, fingers crossed, it will be an acceptance letter. She also applied to Centre.

Valuable, have you given any thought to Middlebury College? Aren't they a school with a good linguistics program?

My son is currently a freshman at Hendrix and seems very happy with his classes so far. His classes are small with 13 students in one, 18 students in two classes and 30 in his largest class this year. The professors have been very available to help when needed and he is involved in athletics and intramurals as well.

Hey, Volunteer Mom, are you from Tennessee? If so, what part? GOOOOO VOLS!

I'm from Texas. I wasn't even thinking about Tennessee when I picked the name, although my father was born and raised in Tennessee.

I shouldn't have assumed you were from Tennessee. I would love to hear about your son and his experiences at Hendrix, classes he is taking, etc.
