High GPA and still rejected?

@ SanFranciscoKid

Did you apply to other UCs? I know UCLA has a Near Eastern Studies major. I think they call it “Mid East and North African Studies”.

@SanFranciscoKid

it’s the internet. people are rude for no reason. :/

@LA

UCLA does have a near east programs but it’s focus is not exclusive to what I want to do. The program is more general and from what i was told is simply a compliment to the global studies/international studies area.

i heard UCLA is opening a brand new Middle East Studies major, but im not sure when that will start. cal also has one but I have no chance there. davis has one too but it’s heavily politicalized.

@ SFkid

Oh ok. I also found one called “Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations” for UCLA. Does San Diego have one? Why do you think you have no chance at Cal? Did you apply? I think you have a great shot if you did. They give a very holistic evaluation and like nontraditional students.

well, the reason i didn’t apply is that my counselor said i had zero chance at cal. next fall my GPA will be 3.7 at best and im not sure if that is competitive enough for cal or UCLA. i was/am bent on UCSB.

@^ wow never let someone tells you what to do !!! seriously, if you don’t apply then your chance will forever remain O. if you apply you may have a chance to get in !!!.

Your counselor is an idiot (no offense). The average accepted GPA for UCLA last year in L&S was about a 3.7. I’m sure Berkeley wasn’t far off from that. An remember, that’s only the average, meaning lots people below that got accepted as well. In fact the average GPA for an accepted student in Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations was a 3.33 and 3.60 for Mid East and N African Studies. You should DEFINITELY complete the pre-reqs and apply for both next year.

I believe I’ve stated this before that UCLA and cal also considers your math and English completion for admissions.

@ Sorry that was for 2010, for 2011 it was a 3.53 for Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations and a 3.44 for Mid East and N African Studies both had over a 50% admit rate, which is pretty good for UCLA.

@lawl

my thoughts exactly. only difference is cal/ucla might have been more understanding as to why my math/english wasn’t done. UCSB reps basically said they didn’t care. i could have been undergoing chemotherapy and it would not have mattered to them.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that you NEED to finish math, english and 60 units by the end of spring??

@smcguy

did you bother to read the thread? i will have 60+ units done, including math and english requirements, by end of spring.

I just talked to sb admissions and the reason I got rejected was because I’m 1 unit over the 130 limit from a four year school and cc and they didn’t think I’d be able to graduate within the unit limit. I was specifically told by a UCSB rep AND an smc counselor that I was within the unit limit. This just goes to show you that things happen to everyone. Good luck to you.

@SFKid

You should definitely apply to Cal as I looked through last years decisions thread for L&S a 3.7 is good. You would certainly have a good shot.

look at #4

@sfkid
I think they really miscounted your units initially and that was the reason for your early rejection. Then after you called them they scapegoated their decision on your IP math/english. That’s just my theory based on the fact that I have friends who have math/english IP with a 3.8 and got in for impacted majors like bio and poli sci.

@BearTerritory3. That sticky is about 5-years old. In other words, possibly and likely, out-dated.

@bear

even if that is true there is nothing i can do about it. UC admissions is closed today because of conferences or something but ill bring it up next week when i call. not only did i not have math english completed, but i was taking an unusual amount of units (18+) to meet the 60 unit threshold.

i was told the only way i can get in at this point is through appeal.

okay i just spoke with another UC rep and she said officers were expecting applicants to have both english and math completed by fall 2011, not spring. if you didn’t have either courses done by then, you would be rejected unless your stats were stellar.

what if you had one done and the other IP?

she didn’t specify. but apparently a lot of qualified applicants who didn’t have english and map done by fall were auto-rejected. apparently the pool was more competitive than last year. it has always been assumed that english/math done before spring is better than not having it done, but IP shouldn’t be a redline according to the guidelines at UCSB.

but apparently it was this year for a lot of students.
