Hello!
I just applied EA to the CoE oos, but I am worried about my test scores.
I earned an ACT 31 Composite: 35 E; 31 M; 26 R; 31 S; 9 Essay (one sitting sept. 2016)
My GPA is a 3.9/4.0 UW - rank 7/344
I took all honors courses with 2 APs (Lang & World) junior year, and 4 APs (Calc BC, Physics C, Lit, & Spanish) senior year. I skipped APUSH opportunity soph year for honors because I just had no interest in the class. Also, I stuck with band all 4 years and thus lost out on extra AP opportunities (worthy trade imo).
My reading subscore is really holding me back, but my AP scores show I am capable of better (5 in Lang, 4 in World). I sent in these scores, could they possibly help compensate for my poor reading score?
Othwerwise, will I still receive decent consideration with my high GPA but low ACT?
BTW, I know that a 31 is fine score, but for the CoE the range is 32-35, so I am under the 25% score.
P.S. I am in a similar position for other schools I might apply to, so replies to this will also help me gauge where else I have a shot at.
Thanks to anyone who responds!
You GPA will be a nice boost, but I am not worried about the ACT as a whole, I would be worried about the 31 in the math subscore. That will draw concern from the adcom since all you classes will surround math.
Do you have any Engineering ECs or classes that emphasize that you want to be in CoE? That would be a huge boost if you have them, or another small blow if you don’t.
Also, always remember that just because you are below their range doesn’t mean you are automatically out. They still clearly accept those students or the range would be much higher. Don’t stress out too much.
Thanks for responding @UofMichigan1999 !
I do have some STEM ECs–varsity math team, robotics, peer tutoring (taught pre-calc to a girl junior year)–
in addition to other technology related ECs.
I also took programming classes sophomore and junior year, and this year (senior year) I am in the highest physics and math courses my school offers.
Also, both my teacher recommendations come from STEM teachers. Maybe that would help too?
Hopefully you are right and I am just worrying too much. I’m not the greatest standardized test taker, so I know my ACT scores don’t represent what I am capable of. Most of my stress just comes from how much the admission counselors care about having high schools stats, even if they know test scores don’t best represent a person’s intelligence.
