High School Class of 2017

Chester County :)

@OverInfinity‌ I’m in the NE region too, MA actually. But my school isn’t lenient. My teachers aren’t open to scheduling, ever.

We have competitions in-state. They get progressively harder each month. Our second one is this week!! Good luck with all your stuff :)

@livelaugh7‌ Same :slight_smile: on Tuesday; it’s the PA Math League thing. Not really the most intense competition around, but I do it anyway because it’s one of the few that are actually offered at my school

Anyone want to talk about dream colleges?

@Overinfinity Stanford.

I don’t have one. Maybe because I haven’t been to very many universities. I went to UCLA on a field trip, UCI for a math competition, and UCSD for a summer program. None of those are a dream college for me, though.

MIT is my top choice.
Other options: Cornell, BU, WPI, Johns Hopkins, Northeastern

MIT is my top choice :slight_smile: Been there just as a trip with my family and also for a math competition (HMMT)
As Princeton is up there, and the campus is so gorgeous. Been there from math too and also I have legacy there, although I don’t know how much that affects ivy applications
Standford is gorgeous too, although I’d rather stay on the East coast.
Wanted to go to Cornell for a while for architecture (math + art = <3) but I’m not sure if I’m up to the long years of architectural school!
Others are UPenn (close to home) and Harvard.

@dsi411 what was your impression of UCLA??

@OverInfinity‌ I hope we both get into MIT!!!

Yale is my top choice
But I also would love dartmouth, upenn, brown, Columbia, Harvard, Georgetown, duke

Who wants to help me out???

So this summer I did an internship, and during then, I got to hold a gallbladder, cut a tumor off a jaw and watch biopsies and endoscopies. Best 15 days of my life. I have no idea how to start an essay talking about this event for an application. Can someone help me out with the first line???

@Spiral7‌ I went in 8th grade on a field trip and it seemed very nice at the time. It seemed big to me at the time but it’s actually the smallest UC. The tour guide didn’t really take us very many places, but we saw the bruin walk, the steps that I forgot the name of, the library, and also the statue of the bear. We didn’t get to go inside anywhere, however. To me the school just seems too urban and small but I’ll definitely still apply.

@livelaugh7‌ What’s the application essay for?

@OverInfinity‌

There is a school in my state that I can apply to as a sophomore. IF I get in, I would go to a school where Junior year, the academics is MUCH MUCH better than Honors and AP courses. Senior year, I would attend college and get college credit, basically, letting me graduate college a year earlier. There is a 45% acceptance rate, but the 100 or so people that apply have almost perfect stats and everything. It is a math and science focus school and everyone that gets in, goes to top 25 colleges in the US.

One of the things I have to do is write an essay and it can be about anything. I have been having trouble thinking up a starting or introductory sentence.

This school is basically perfect and I really want to attend. I will probably get stellar recommendations from my H PreCalc, H Chem and APUSH teachers (THEY ALL LOVE ME :)). I have good EC in comparison to the people who got in from my school. My courses are the MOST rigorous that my school offers currently. I will have good grades and a high GPA. The only part that may hurt me is my class rank because I got a B+ and a few A- freshman year (but I also took hard classes and that should mean something). First term this year I have all As except for two B+ in Physics and PreCalc and a B in APUSH. Second term should be MUCH MUCH BETTER.

Okay.

edit: Also, the fact that English is my second language and I’m a girl (not many girls apply to the school) should have some impact.

I’ll stop. Sorry for the essay. Should go and do write APUSH notes, read The Odyssey and do my Spanish homework now…

Thanks

Yeah girl-power :slight_smile: @livelaugh7 that sounds awesome… I wish that there were programs like that in my area. Being ESL and female does help (although being chinese isn’t exactly a pro…) but women in STEM is considered a minority, so you would have good chances of getting in. I know one of my really good friends was planning on doing duel enrollment in college, but instead, he’s graduating early this year.

@livelaugh7‌ Have you taken AP Euro yet? In my school, we typically take African Asian Studies freshman year (most boring class everrr), Euro in 10th, and APush in 11th.

My dream would be Berkley or NYU

My dream is Stanford. Forever and always. I actually was there, like, yesterday xD

However, I’m also definitely considering Berkeley (the main reason I don’t want to go there is the inflexibility in changing majors) and Harvey Mudd (if I manage to get a scholarship–since the endowment isn’t very big, the financial aid probably isn’t the greatest, either). I’m probably staying in California for college…

HARVARD.
