High School Class of 2018

@BucketsUCSC If we are talking about the schedule that was posted on the thread a few days ago, that schedule looks pretty dang good. I just want to mention that my school doesn’t offer AP, IB, H classes, they only offer accelerates courses for Alg 2 and Geometry. From what you are saying, I feel I am not NEARLY as competitive as another applicant. I can only tell you that I am self-studying AP’s, taking multiple online classes from prestigious universities, am participating in programs, varsity sports, and EC’s. My GPA is hopefully going on an upward trend and my SAT score is still in practice (I haven’t taken it officially yet). I just thought I would mention that.

@apple1893 You will not be disadvantaged for the lack of advanced classes at your school. You don’t have to self study APs either; but it does show initiative to do so.

@BucketsUCSC Most of the UCs are relatively easy to get in to. GPA has little meaning if one does not consider course rigor. Someone can take the easiest classes at his or her school and get strait A’s, but it doesn’t mean as much as strait A’s from someone who takes all honors classes, even if they’re not UC approved.

@TP2000 I am self-studying AP Computer Sciecne because I love the programming, that’s all

@BucketUCSC I remember when I was 12, I wanted to do Political Science. Then when I was 14 (earlier this year)… I wanted to do Psychology. But as of today, I want to go back in the interest of Political Science. I am in a Law program at my school and the school requires us to take thematic courses such as Speech and Constitutional Law. Keep in mind, I’m entering my third week. So what do you expect? Most sophomores at my school take AP Bio.

@apple1893 and that’s exactly what I’m saying you’re self studying AP’s because your school doesn’t offer them showing initiative.Sidenote I’m self studying AP Comp Science as well

@cxprus that’s great it seems as you are taking initiative and seem like a competitive I was getting mixed up I forgot that not all schools were system schools only UCSS/UCD/UCSB meaning they assign a set number of points for weighted GPA, SAT score, and number of UC weighted honours, and the people with the most points get in you seem like a very competitive applicant

Thanks for the support and the motivational word (initiative)! @BucketsUCSC Really?! How do you like it so far? I really love it!!!

@TP2000 In the grand scheme of things, most of the UCs are NOT relatively easy to get into. You need a 4.0+ and a 1900+ to have a reasonable chance of getting into even the mid-level UCs.

@mototriu what I’m trying to say I want to let @cxprus know that his schedule wasn’t super challenging and was average to below average compared to that of an uc admit and him myself and all of us need to work really hard to get into these schools

I like it but it’s A LOT harder than any of the courses I’m taking in school I think I can get at least a 4 @apple1893 and it’s one of those courses where I want to keep learning more so I feel ill do well

Also I’m thinking about taking the course online through a provider like UC scout or JHU CTY but I heard CTY was really hard so I’ll probably take it for Scout and I have the option for auditing so if I get an A in the course I get an A and if I get a B it isn’t in my transcript so are you thinking about any online providers or self study @apple1893

AP Comps Sci isn’t that hard for me, and I think I have a shot at a 5. If you want more preperation try this website https://www.edx.org/course/preparing-ap-computer-science-exam-level-uc-berkeleyx-lucs-1x it is an online course through UC Berkeley. I am using a lot of online courses at once, so that makes it more helpful.

Are you making any of them as part of your official grade so that you actually took the class and then using other sources for just preparation

Thanks and I’ll probably enroll

Yea its gonna be good

@apple1893 I have little knowledge about coding or programming i know basic HTML but have learned nothing about JAVA yet do you think it’s an introductory or what do you recommend I study up on before stating the Berkeley course

learn and understand the hello world programs, strings, variable, and booleans!!! You MUST KNOW THIS STUFF
@BucketsUCSC

Ok do you think I can get a solid understanding on these topics before the course starts in October and thanks

Yes you can!!! Just make sure you are focused. I will be purchasing the latest barrons textbook btw, and if you are serious of taking this test, then you should get it too. @BucketsUCSC

Yeah no doubt I have Barron’s for WHAP and I really like the details they provide definitely choosing Barron’s over the Princeton review
