High School Class of 2018

Anyone doing speech or debate? I’m doing speech right now and it’s pretty good! I got 4th out of 8 at my first meet, and 3rd out of 6 at my second. I’m just glad I was good enough to place, tbh

Also, anyone doing NaNoWriMo? I signed up for it because I’m in my school’s Creative Writing club, but I don’t really have an idea for what I’m going to write about yet…

@Hamlon you make me cry i have an 88 in AP world i will kill myself if i dont get an A

What is TASS? @Hamlon

I’m class of 2018! Freshman year, I didn’t try at all and barely received a weighted 3.1 GPA. This year, I’ve made a complete turn around. My schedule consists of:
Digital Interactive Media (weighted)
Digital Art
Psychology
P AP Algebra 2
P AP English 2
AP World History
P AP Chemistry.
Not a very heavy workload, but I plan on changing that Junior year. Last grading period I made 100, 98, 94, 93, 93, 93, 98, and 84 respectively. These grades left me unsatisfied, so I worked a bit harder and now this grading period I’m making 98, 100, 96, 96, 102, 100, and 97. They could be higher in a few areas but I’m pretty satisfied with my progress so far.

Do you guys know people who have made this turn around? How are you guys doing in your classes? Do you guys plan on doing Dual Credit if its available to you? How do your high schools weigh Dual Credit? I plan on taking 3 Dual Credit classes over the summer, and they’re weighed the same AP.

@Phantomlink Thanks for correcting @frazzledazzle. I’m actually a girl, but no offense taken. :))
@tonyk16 I heard Project Lead the Way classes were weighted at other schools, but at ours it’s not. It’s required for everyone in the STEM program to take at least one class each year as an elective.
@frazzledazzle I’m going to try harder this 6 weeks and come in for tutoring right when I need help. Having debates with a pro-Trump teacher is a sure way to wake someone up at 8 in the morning!
@BucketsUCSC Don’t fret! If you don’t reach your goal, regroup at the end of the grading period and look at what you can do differently to get your grade up. How much time do you have left to get an A?
@aspiringgirl TASS stands for the Telluride Association’s Sophomore Seminars. It’s where you go to a college campus for 6 weeks to talk about African-American issues, cultural identity, etc. I want to get in so badly!

@Hamlon That’s great! My younger sister (HS '19) has debates with her Civics teacher all the time about politics. Her stories are great! We’re both avid Bernie fans.

@zoriez I would KILL to have your grades right now!!! I had a 90% average at my midterm and I am not ready to look at my grades at the end of the marking term.

@LosingCrayon I signed up for last year but didn’t actually do it. I can only write when I’m in the mood and can’t just like sit down and make it happen lol. It’s a really neat program and my best friend is going to do it this year I think.
@zoriez Wow! That’s very impressive! I’ve thought about doing dual enrollment over the summer, but I’ve decided that I’d rather spend it doing volunteer work, enrichment camps, etc. I need to ask my GC if my school offers credit for it. If they do and I want my class rank to be higher later on, I might reconsider it.

@zoriez Those are amazing grades and seems that you have really improved from what you had said about freshman year. I have not seen someone turn around like that I my school, but some people do and I think it is great. As for dual credit, I plan on taking a psych class at the university in fall of next year because it seems interesting and my school doesn’t offer AP psych.
My friend keeps harassing me about how I should take pre calc at the local university this upcoming summer (he did this last year) because he says I should take AP calc next year. Has anyone every taking pre calc over the summer? He says it was wicked easy, but I am very skeptical…

@tonyk16 I’m taking pre-calculus at school right now, but it is basically algebra 2 review. :expressionless: I’m taking Calculus AB next year.

Yeah that is what my friend is saying, that pre calc is just review of algebra II, and he said it is worth it so I can take AP Calculus next year and then Stats senior year. Math is one of my better subjects and I enjoy it.

@tonyk16 My Pre-Calc teacher jokingly calls the class “Algebra III.” I’m taking regular level Calc AB & BC junior and senior year, respectively. Math is a great subject. I enjoy it immensely and am on one of my school’s 7 math teams.

@tonyk16 I took pre-calc over the summer. I was going to take it at the community college, but there were lots of complications, and I ended up basically homeschooling myself. I’m in AP Calculus (BC) this year, and feel good about it so far!

There is really no reason to bump up, unless you really like math. Does your school offer Calc III/Diffe Q?

@frazzledazzle 7 math teams!?! I just found out not long ago that we do actually have an Alg III class at our school. I didn’t even know such a thing existed, but it sort of makes sense now.
Yeah my pre-calc teacher is also the IB HL/further/math team teacher and holds a philosophy that you should not trust what people say and that translates into him deriving every. single. formula. plus just teaching us stuff that not actually in the curriculum. We all have kinda learned by know how to tell when he is just going off on something else and what we are actually going to be tested on. Next semester we are learning the beginning of calculus and whatever he thinks is important from statistics in preparation to go into IB HL Math (Basically Calc BC) so that’s going to be interesting.

@Madeline25 There are between 10-17 people per team (10 scorers + alternates). There are 1200 people at my school.

@frazzledazzle We have a solid 500 kids at my school, if we’re lucky…and one math team. A couple of great math students graduated last year so our team is, for now, mediocre.

@wonderfulreads I love math, and I do plan on maybe minoring in mathematics or statistics in college so it is well worth it for me. My school does not offer Calc III, but students have taken it at the university before… I have a friend that, if all goes well, will be lacking one course from a math minor when he graduates high school, he has an insane aptitude for mathematics, and has an unweighted 100% in Calc AB right now.

@tonyk16 If you are really interested, go for it! Would you take AB or BC next year?

@wonderfulreads My school only offers Calculus AB so that is what I will be taking next year. What is the difference between AB and BC anyways?

@tonyk16 So an oversimplified version is:

A= Pre-Calculus Review
B= Calculus I
C= Calculus II

So AB is just Calc I, while BC has Calc I and II in a year. It is to my understanding it is not like this at all of the schools though, since you have to take AB and BC. At my school you take it one or the other.

You would probably take AB junior year, Calc II first semester senior year at the college, and then you could take Calc III / Diffe Q or even Discrete second semester.

@tonyk16 We have 1 great math team (top in state, all calc bc or higher students) and 6 decent to mediocre ones. We have 3-4 really smart math/science students who are seniors right now.
