High School Class of 2018

@wonderfulreads Yeah, okay that makes sense. I just didn’t really know what the difference was. Thank you. Yeah most likely I will be doing that. Are you going to be taking Calc III next year?

@tonyk16 Yep! I’m not sure about senior year though. My school usually changes which class it offers.

@frazzledazzle That is cool. We have almost 40 kids in one calc AB class which is a lot at my small school. We have to use two class rooms on “lab” days.

@wonderfulreads Perhaps Stats?

@tonyk16 My school does offer AP Stats all the time, but the post Calc III class changes. This year they are doing topology and real analysis, last year they did number theory. There is also rumors of a competition math class, which I could potentially double up with.

What’s a “lab” day in math?

I don’t even know. My friend is in AP Calc AB and he said they do 80 min. Periods one day and 40 min. “Lab’s” the next. I’ve heard it’s like a math study hall…

@frazzledazzle That makes sense. At our school what we refer to as ‘math team’ is all students who compete in competitions combined.

And speaking of classes at universities, has anyone started college visits yet? I’ve visited Columbia and Georgetown while we have been on vacations in the area and am probably going to take a weekend to do in state schools soon.

@Madeline25 I think of it as a blanket term for all of the teams at my school.
I haven’t visited any colleges (except for Harvard a long time ago and NEC in March). I hope to visit Dartmouth when I see family in Vermont over Thanksgiving break. I probably will visit McGill next summer, but I don’t know about the rest of them.

Does anyone else have a list of colleges yet? I feel like the only sophomore who does (at least at my school).

@frazzledazzle I have not visited any colleges yet, but I probably should. I will most likely be attending a state university because I can’t afford schools like Dartmouth or MIT and such.

@tonyk16 I’m applying to a state school because 1) it’s 20 minutes away from me, and 2) it’s not incredibly expensive. I plan on applying for financial aid since the vast majority of private colleges cost more than what my family makes in a year.

@frazzledazzle I have a list, but I keep finding my criteria changing and liking even more and more schools, so I’m trying to to be so rigid about it quite yet.

@tonyk16 @frazzledazzle Top tier privates, especially Ivies, are known to give a ton of aid, so don’t give up that dream quite yet.

I’m so blessed that my father works super hard so we can live comfortably. Although we don’t live a crazy extravagant lifestyle, money has never really been an issue. But you know college is a completely different ballpark so I need to discuss that with them. I’ve been putting it off. My father highly values education so I think he will be supportive. The thing is, even if he agrees to pay for private school, I would feel so guilty asking them to pay that much money when I could go state school for less.

@Hamlon 2 months but i need to find someone to help me out

All you guys applying to Ivies while i’m like I’ll throw a party if i get into UCI LOLLL

@bucketsucsc yes I’m probably going to UCI too haha

@BucketsUCSC Go state universities.

@Madeline25 I don’t think I have the absolute best grades/ extracurricular’s to get into an Ivie league school. I would be happy to get into Boston university. I have a cousin that graduated from there and she said it is a pretty good school.

I will not be attending a “fancy” school because they are all 15+ hours away from me or are not financially feasible. It is also a lot of money to probably get rejected.
I’m okay with it though, there are worse things than being able to come home and do my laundry  Plenty of very intelligent people are happy at “terrible” schools (by this website’s standards, anyways).

@frazzledazzle what’s your list? and on that topic what’s anyone(who has one)'s list?

I want to go to UCLA but I don’t know too many other schools

@Madeline25 I have a list of 12 schools that has stayed basically the same for the past few months.

@tonyk16 BU is a great school! I have it on my list.

@gormar099 My list, in alphabetical order, is:

Boston University
Caltech
Dartmouth
Harvard
McGill
New England Conservatory of Music (dual-enrollment with Harvard)
Princeton
Swarthmore
UChicago
UMaine (only because in-state)
Whitman
Yale

A lot of these schools are reaches. I can dream!

@tonyk16 I also think BU is great!
@gormar099 I don’t really have a complete ‘list’ per say but some schools I like are…,
Duke Univerity
Northwestern University
Havard University
Brandeis University
Georgetown University
Rice University
University of Pennsylvania
University of Virginia
College of Charleston
Furman University

@frazzledazzle I’m with you. I can have my unrealistic dreams if I want to and I really don’t care what anyone thinks :))

@Madeline25 That’s quite a comprehensive list! I might look into some of these schools! My mom thinks I should have more realistic dreams. My dream school is Caltech. I reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaallllllllyyyyyyy want to go to Caltech. Mom wants me to be more realistic and go to Harvard. :))
