High School Class of 2018

Hi @tonyk16 Welcome back! If you want change the notification settings, you need to press the button that looks like the world and then press Notification Preferences. That seems like a very neat schedule. I’m kind of jealous that most of the people on this thread are already taking AP classes. I’m take Spanish II and Pre-Calculus next year as well. I’m taking Spanish I now. I actually just took my chapter 2 test. I would recommend taking maybe one less AP class senior year though. If you can handle the workload then take them. I know I couldn’t handle that.

@TrainerGary Those are some pretty good classes to take.

@ak2018 I had previous programming experience before I took the class. However, I am taking this class on line on a system kind of like Florida Virtual High School. So at first it was interesting and fun but then things just got complicated because I didn’t feel like I was building on top of the things I learnt, it was just kind of jumbled up together. And when I would ask for help my teacher would not help me and did not even give me any resources. So now I am completely lost in the class and I don’t understand anything. So if you want to take this class make sure you have a good teacher and that you really really like programming.

I have 1 more week of classes before midterm exams and I’m stressing out. I currently have a 92% in Chemistry Honors and we only have one more grade to go in; a quiz this coming Monday. I have to do well on this quiz so I can keep my A and exempt the midterm to get an A for the semester. Also in AP World I currently have an 88% with a few more assignments left so I’m hoping to get that up to an A! Besides those I have a very comfortable A in the rest of my classes except algebra 2 in which I have a C.

@Cookiesandcreme I see what you mean. This is my first year learning any programming at all. Which is only on Excel, Google Forms, and Visual Basic (Which I’m liking) as of right now. I’ll have to talk to the AP Computer Science teacher to see if he’s or she’s any good. But as I said before, most of the teachers don’t this stuff. As well as being a new class and all, the curriculum is really weird. If you ask me, it might be better to take a regular programming class if your school, or get help from the programming teacher. I think the fact that most students are complaining about not understanding the class is the reason why the College Board is making a new course as an Introduction to AP Computer Science called AP Computer Science Principles. I hope it’s good. You should see if your school’s willing to have it next year. If you still want to learn about programming after this.

@ak2018 Oh yeah, I forgot that you can do that with the notifications. Thanks! Yeah, like I said it is not set yet and I will most likely change my schedule by senior year. I kind of like to aim high and hit low. AP world is something I might not do, and stats is considered one of the “easier” AP’s at my school or according to some upper class men.

@TrainerGary Chem and physics are pretty cool. Science is not necessarily my strong suit, but pull through it and still manage good grades. I wish I could do AP physics but it is hard to fit into my schedule because my school doesn’t have it every year.

@Phantomlink That seems very stressful. I’m in the same boat as you. I literally just took an Honors Chemistry test on the Periodic Table Trends (like Electronegativity and Ionization Energy and stuff like that) and I got an 88%. My grade in that class is in 83%, the interim ends on the 9th of December and I honestly do not care about my grades right now, as long as I work harder and get them up by the end of the quarter. I currently have 1 A and 5 B’s and 1 C’s. I have one more test on Bonding before the Winter Break.

It’s so hard to keep up with a thread unless you’re constantly checking CC. Anyways, I’m assuming people are talking about what classes they are currently taking. I’m currently taking English, Trig/Pre-Calc (one semester each), Chem I/Physics I (one semester each), and Spanish II, and all of these are honors. I’m also taking AP Euro, AP Stats, and AP Psych at school. I finished AP Micro this previous summer and am currently taking AP Comp Sci online. I’m not really sure what commentary to add to this, but I do appreciate if anybody has something to say to this.

@Pandu16 That’s a really good schedule! And yeah it is hard to keep up with this thread, but I read it like 3 times a day, so yeah I am constantly checking it. And also I think taking AP Comp Sci online is something a lot of people are doing. And actually we were talking about the classes we plan to take in junior and senior year. I think I was mainly the one who brought it up as I will have to pick my classes for the next year in February.

@Pandu16 @ak2018 I constantly have the tab open, and I check the thread multiple times a day.

Oh and by the way, has anyone read Fahrenheit 451 or 1984 yet. We’ve been reading these books for my English class. After the break, we’re reading Frankenstein. I hate 1984, its so boring and the chapters are honestly so drab. I do like Frankenstein though.

@ak2018 I have both of those books on my list, but I haven’t read them yet. How is Fahrenheit 451?

@frazzledazzle Fahrenheit 451 is great. Especially the first line of the book, it really is an attention grabber. Fahrenheit 451, by the way, is the temperature at which paper burns. Meaning if you were to leave a book in the oven, it would burn at 451° F. The book was made in the 40’s, is by Ray Bradbury, and is supposed to critique how in the future, society will be addicted to technology on a grand scale. It really is exciting and has a good pace, unlike 1984. In my opinion, that book is as dull, long, and boring as Winston’s sex life before he met Julia (they are the main characters). It was made in 1948, (all George Orwell, the creator of the book, did was change 1948 into 1984) and is intended to critique our government and how it is slowly taking away our freedom and controlling us. We had to annotate both of these books. I can’t wait until we finish 1984 and move onto Frankenstein, which is by Mary Shelley, in January.

And I also do the tab thing too. I check this thread multiple times a day as well just seeing if I can help anyone out. It’s only been a week and I already love how awesome this thread is.

I try to check multiple times per day, if I have the time. I haven’t commented on here until now because I was so lost on what y’all were talking about up until now. It felt so weird haha.
I don’t think we are reading next. My English teacher told us, but I forgot. It wasn’t anything named yet I don’t think. We just finished The Great Gatsby. It’s so good, but gosh it’s pessimistic.

We are reading Fahrenheit 451 next semester and are currently reading Macbeth. It’s good but the characters are so dark…

So I know it’s off topic, but am I the only that thinks chemistry and precal are fun? They are like puzzles and I think they are really fun!!! My friends think I’m crazy though…Please tell me I’m not the only one!!!

@Madeline25 Unfortunately, our English class will not be reading The Great Gatsby. I’ve heard, however, that it is a great book and the movie came out on my birthday in 2013.

This is a list of books I have read or will read this year for my English class:

Fahrenheit 451 - Read
1984 - Currently Reading
Frankenstein - Going To Read
Coraline - Going To Read

I love Frankenstein and I saw the Coraline movie and it was great!

@sewin2music Almost everything by Shakespeare is dark. I’ve read Romeo and Juliet last year and Hamlet in the 7th grade and believe me, they’re pretty dark. And you’re alone, math and science have pretty been my favorite subjects in school since the 8th grade. This year I like Math more than Science. I’m in Algebra II and Honors Chemistry. Math is kind of like a puzzle for me too!

I’m in English 3 and all we’ve read this year is the crucible.

@sewin2music
I’m taking both H Precalc and H Chem and I LOVE both. My friends think I’m weird too.

I enjoy Precalc and Chem too.

Over the summer I had to read Catcher in the Rye. We read The Crucible in 9th grade, and this year we’re reading Death of a Salesman. Both of them make me so freaking sad grr

My English class is finishing To Kill a Mockingbird next class and we have to do the essay over it. Our next book is supposed to be The Crucible, but we won’t start that till after Christmas break.

@ak2018 Fahrenheit 451 is a phenomenal book. I read a little over a month ago and it I too found it interesting how Ray Bradbury wrote it in the 40’s or so and foreshadowed how in today’s society we will be so reluctant on technology. And if you think about it, he also mentioned technology that they could have only dreamed of back then that we have now (thin TV’s the size of walls, Robotic Bank Tellers or ATM’s). As for 1984, I am reading it right now and find it very hard to compare to Fahrenheit 451, it is just too boring. The message is there, but it’s just not informed very well I guess. I’ll finish it and hopefully Orwell has something else up his sleeve for the second half of the book or else, I will be very disappointed.
