@tonyk16 I feel the exact same way about 1984. My teacher simply said that it’s hard for teenagers our age to relate to the message of 1984. It’s more for an older, more mature audience. Unfortunately, Orwell will not be writing a sequel anytime soon, or writting anything for that matter. He died two years after 1948, when he wrote the book. Sad too. He never got to see if his 1984 future came true.
By the way, if you’re interested in reading a book somewhat like Fahrenheit 451, I recommend reading the Awaken series by Katie Kacvinsky. It’s brings up the same issues and some more of the current ones, like shootings and bombings. Imagine a world where everyone is afraid to go outside, where every child in the country is enrolled in digital school. There is a resistance movement coming about as well of which the main character, Maddie, goes into with her love interest, Justin. And her father is the one who started the digital school, which she is resisting against. Overall, it was a fantastic book. 5/5 stars.
@tonyk16 I also read To Kill a Mockingbird last year. I barely understood it and may have to read it again. I did, however, have to do an essay on Fahrenheit 451 which was on the many futuristic devices Bradbury predicted would become reality. We’re actually supposed to finish 1984 next Thursday and I have about 70 more pages to read. After that, we’re supposed to buy Frankenstein and read that during the break.
This year, my class is going to read The Great Gatsby and The Bluest Eye, along with In The Time of the Butterflies and Into the Wild. We had our independent reading books last quarter (I read Moby Dick). Right now we are on our poetry unit.
@frazzledazzle That is quite the interesting list of books. We’re also on the poetry unit as well. We’re currently reading a poem called Dover Beach. We have a quiz on it tomorrow.
Schools get PSAT scores in early to mid-December, but some schools choose to give out scores immediately while others choose to release scores as late as mid-February.
woo! I finished all of my sociology assignments! now I just have to wait until Thursday when my teacher opens her final exam, take that and get my credit!
Does anyone else here like finals week? Usually the finals aren’t all that hard, and you don’t get any homework during the week. It’s usually the week before finals that stresses me out the most (right now) because of the last few tests and projects
Also, my English teacher has only put in bellringer points for the quarter Pretty much everyone has a 100 for this quarter, and there’s only 9 more days left of school
@LosingCrayon We don’t have a finals week at my school. That’s because we have our classes for one year instead of one semester. Also, our school got rid of midterms years ago, but our teachers still give us end of 2nd quarter tests, which are accumulative, to get around the no midterm rule. Our end of the 2nd quarter for us isn’t until January. Anyways, just study hard and well and good luck!
It’s alright I got 2 weeks of crazy tests before winter break. I also am on the cusp of A-'s in like 3 of my classes which is frustrating. How about you?
