I am a sophomore in high school and I really want to get into the Wayne State Med Start Program. I know it is highly competitive and requires a lot of hard work. My question is what classes should I be taking in high school? I already plan to take chem AP, Physics AP, Biology, AP, Calculas AB, and Anatomy and Physiology. I am currently taking GBBE (Genetics, Bacteriology, Biotechnology, and Embryology) and APUSH. I have one free class open in my senior year. Should I continue with a foreign language and take Spanish 4, or should I take two half year classes, organic chemistry, and psychology 1? Also I am taking Honors English right now and if i continue that for my juinor and senior years I would take English AP. I dont really know if I can handle all of those APs so I was wondering if I could drop the English AP. Is that an important class for getting into this med program? Please help me out! Also, does anyone know how I can job shadowing at hospitals...like a website or who to contact? Thanks in advance!

I’m assuming you’ve read this but it will help you if you haven’t: [Irvin D. Reid Honors College - MedStart](http://www.honors.wayne.edu/medstart.php#checklist)

There aren’t any specific classes you’ll need (although having a rigorous curriculum is better than having three gym classes a day) but if you can handle what you have already it looks fine. Just remember that your classes and grades aren’t the only thing they’ll look at on your application. Make sure you have most if not all of the things they have listed under “Explanation of Experience”. If you go to a nearby hospital’s website there should be a job shadow application of some sort if they offer it. This would probably be under the “Careers” or “Volunteer” page on their website.

but do you think it would be okay if i dropped AP English in juinor and senior year? Like if i didnt take a class like AP Chemistry or AP Biology it would make a big difference. Would it be the same for AP English for getting into the MedStart program?

No, not unless you’re a master rhetorician do I think you should drop English. Being a good writer is important, too. On the other hand, if GBBE isn’t a college-level class {which is sounds like it isn’t, the courses you listed generally come after bio/chem in college} then I think it would be advantageous for you to take AP Chem, Bio, over it. Take at least one year of AP English – if it’s Language & Composition, it may actually le gasp end up helping.

My advice to you is not to take AP Chem and possibly not Anatomy. The reason being is because even if you score a 5 on the AP test ALL PreMed schools will make you take the class over again. The reason they do that is because chem is a major contribute to med school and they don’t trust your school to teach it the right way(also they want to see how will you do in their course and if your fit to be in Med School). As for Anatomy, it wont really be needed, if you take AP Bio. The best thing for you to do is take AP Physics(b) and AP Calc(ab). I would do this because I highly doubt that you would want to be taking math based classes in PreMed which is supposed to be Bio Based. The AP English would be a smart move to take one of the two years that your not taking AP science classes.
Hope that helped.

^Congrats on reviving a 3 year-old thread.
