High school club lapse

Hey guys,

I'm getting worried about the college process in terms of extracurriculars and volunteer work. I feel like I do not have enough, even though I clearly understand that quality beats quantity. Here are the main and current things I have been doing--oh yeah I'm currently a junior in HS:

co-leader of GSA (9, 10, 11)
intern at a book publishing company (9, 10, 11, 12)
co-leader of anime club (9, 10)
volunteer @ petco taking care of cats (10, 11, 12)
volunteer at Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation center (11, 12)
school tour guide for my high school (10, 11, 12)
* will continue.

Here is my issue: the main reason why there was no anime club this year was because of my bad advertising. I forgot to put up flyers/posters advertising the club, but I did have my guidance counselor send out a mass email telling everyone there would be an anime club. But not enough people showed up at the meeting and were interested (we need 10 people at least in order for a club to be allowed). Before I knew it, I completely forgot about the anime club throughout the year (SAT prep, AP class (yes, one class, I know--it's all I could handle, personally) etc.) I have decided that I would start the anime club next year with a friend, just like the first two years of high school. Should I be worried that the anime club did not occur during my junior year? Anime is something that I am truly passionate about but had not been able to create the club this year :( I don't want colleges to think that I'm starting just to put it on my application........the time lapse is kind of bothering me.......

First, volunteering is looked at separately from E.C.'s. It looks like you have quite a lot of volunteering, which looks great for colleges. You also have an internship, which like a job, shows maturity, and self sufficiency.

Now then, moving onto the E.C.'s. Your concerns about them are justified. As for the Anime Club, if you founded it, and are actively trying to restart it, then it looks great. I wish you luck in that endeavor. The fact that it didn’t run isn’t much of your fault, and if you write an essay about it or something, the lapse of it your junior year won’t work against you. As for being a tour guide, is that to help out new students, or for parents, or what? Either would look good, but helping out with new students is a great E.C. As for GSA, are you just not doing it next year, or are you just not continuing on as leader? Try to keep doing it, and as leader, if possible.

Overall, you have okay E.C.'s. By no means are they bad, but they would probably be one of the weaker parts of your application. Get into leadership positions in what you are doing, and keep volunteering. Joining multiple things your senior year looks like padding, so be aware of that.
