High School eduction with A-levels

Hi there,

It seems to be the case that top universities want an education in high school similar to:
Eng 4yrs, Mat 4yrs, History/Social Studies: 3+yrs, Science, 3+yrs, Foreign Language 3+yrs.

Cambridge A-levels seem to encourage 3-4 A-levels, however the above requirements are asking for around 5-7 subjects (depending on how many sciences you take). What does that mean for us?

I have A-level English, Maths, Physics, Computer Science and Music. I do not have History, Chem, Bio or a Foreign Language, but in Year 7-10 (NZ education system, ~Y10-13 is high school), I have done 4 years of Spanish, IG Combined Science (including Chem+Bio), and 4years of Humanities (History + Geography).

Do you think that would count for the requirements they are asking for?

Also, is it essential to have Chem+Bio for a computer science degree at, say, Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, MIT etc.?

Thanks,
David

Most schools will be aware of the A Level system and the fact you will be doing only three or four subjects for the last few years of pre-university education under the A Levels. Chances are that the colleges will ask you to send both your A Level scores and your transcript at the end of Year 10 (sounds like you did the IGSCE - they will probably ask you to send that). Don’t worry about the pre-reqs.

Do you mean Chem + Bio at A Levels or Chem + Bio classes in college? If you mean the former, the answer is no. If you mean the latter, that depends on the school and their individual degree/major requirements.

hey piklets,
i did the O-levels mostly and a bunch of science APs and one A-level.
I did get into my current university which requires the same requirements actually.

from my understanding, the only use of A-levels and APs is college credit. (which MIT doesn’t give). And as long as you’ve taken all those subjects specified at some point after 8th or 7th grade, I think you’re fine.

also, more reassurance: I know friends who did purely O-levels and 3 A-levels (in science) who got into MIT. So, there.

P.s. o-levels or anyother equivalent.

Thanks R-DNA and gt608rmcf :)

I already have:
79% in IG Combined Science
90% in IG Maths
91% in IG Computing

88% in IG English
92% in IG Music
94% in IG Physics
94% in AS Computing
96% in AS Maths

And I am set to get this year:
80% in AS Music
80% in AS English Lit
90% in A2 Computing
95% in A2 Maths.

Next year is my last year of high school, and I was thinking of taking the following:
A2 Physics
A2 Music
University Maths extension program

 • focus more on my extra-curricular activities & community involvement etc.

Do you think it would be wise only taking 2 papers in my school and 1 university paper? Do you think taking A2 English is really important?

Also, do you think I’m looking good so far to get into one of the top computer science universities (MIT/Stanford/Princeton)? Of course I will need to take a SAT test as well. When do you recommend I take the SAT test?

Hi R- DNA!
which university are you in?
do you really think that APs and A levels won’t be useful for admission to top US universities? only for credit?
I am asking because i am doing A levels at present.
