Congratulations to all of you who have just graduated! My son had his graduation last night and we had such a great time! We are all so proud of him and are excited for the summer and getting ready for college life at Cal Poly SLO! I am sure all of the parents here feel the same way!

Did this turn into a Mother’s Motivational forum or something?

There are more parents of Cal Poly students than actual Cal Poly students on this forum.

0_o…True that.

I wonder if they did their kids homework also…

Most of us parents could not do our kids homework if we tried! Calculus and Physics AP, no way! LOL!!! But seriously, many of the parents have posted some very useful information on this forum. Congrats to your son momofmv. It is a very exciting time for all of the seniors.

Thanks CalMom05. Congrats to you and your son as well. I thought the forum was for anyone interested in Cal Poly. The Facebook site is just for the students. I have learned and shared a lot of information here. I am sure that the students have benefitted from some of the parent discussions.

I thought I was being nice congratulating the students…I didn’t expect students to be so rude.

Hi momofmv, I read your congratulations message late last night and was too tired to reply. I have to admit, I was kind of taken aback, too. We parents have been here all along, and yes, showing support for our kids. As CalMom05 said, most of us couldn’t do our kids’ homework if we tried! Like many of us here, I’ve been very fortunate to have a daughter who has been self-motivated and didn’t need help from me. Truth be known, I hardly even knew what what she was studying. So, no, you won’t see me “helicoptering” around Cal Poly checking up on my daughter’s homework or anything else. ;)

We also had a wonderful graduation ceremony on Friday. This was a remarkable class. I’m proud of my daughter’s accomplishments as a salutatorian, as well as growing into the fine young woman we’ve raised her to be. She was lucky to have her father sit next to her in the front row. He also got to call her name off before she received her diploma. He’s a teacher there and they all sit with the students. This time he had the pleasure of sitting with his own daughter!

So, yes! Congratulations to the Class of 2010! And, up next is Cal Poly SLO!

Wonderful news about your daughter 2Leashes. How proud you all must be! My son is very self-motivated as well and doesn’t need any help with school work. I like to come here to learn and pass along information to him. he doesn’t have a lot of time to be researching the many things we need to know about for Cal Poly.

Thanks for the kind words!

Congrats to your whole family, momofmv. When I met your son at Open House I was very impressed! A really nice young man. And, tall! You’re right that the kids don’t often have time to visit here on CC. My daughter probably posted once last year on a Chance Me thread and that’s it. Any tidbits that I can pass on are helpful.

Hi CP Moms,

We just got through graduation, too! S moved over to the Cal Poly FB group soon after he was accepted. So, some of those who decide to on cc…well, in my opinion, have too much free time…

Anyway, looking forward to a great summer!

Suggestion, we could keep this thread going just like our parents of 2010 thread.

Momofmv, thank you for sharing your enthusiam, and thank you to all parents and students who have posted positive and helpful messages. I do not post often, but I check this site frequently, and have passed lots of helpful info onto my s… and he is very appreciative. I hope others who enjoy the positive messages here will also support you in this thread.

Thank you parents! I have yet to hear from a student, but I can see that this is a Motivational Thread for parents who then go and support and motivate their children.
I think we all benefit from supporting each other. Students and parents alike.

I was under the impression that all of your children were self-motivating gods and goddesses? I think I need to work on my reading comprehension.

Why are you being so rude?

Hi all, mom of a Cal Poly ‘13 student here. I drove down to SLO last week to move my son out of his Cerro Vista apartment. The campus was hopping, as was the farmers’ market downtown. Many families of soon-to-be-graduates were in town early for the festivities, and there was a really wonderful vibe to the campus. Students were finishing up their finals, moving out, and looking forward to the summer.

My son had a great first year at Cal Poly. He changed his major from EE to CPE, which wasn’t difficult given that the 2 majors have such a large overlap of classes. He was able to register for all of the courses he wanted every quarter, although he had to sacrifice a bit and take 9am classes at times (he’s a night owl). He had excellent professors, some more than once. His labs were engaging and he enjoyed all of the programming he’s been doing, even in non-programming courses. He carried his interest in robotics over from high school and was very active in the robotics team on campus. He has plans to build a transmitter/receiver application and an iPhone app over the summer. His grades are good and he’s learned an enormous amount - what could be better?

My younger son just graduated from high school earlier this month, so he’s getting ready to go off to college as well. He’s a very different student from my older son, and Cal Poly would not have been the right school for him. To me this just goes to show that Cal Poly isn’t for everyone, but for those who know what they want to study and who thrive in a hands-on learning environment, it’s magic.

Good luck to the class of '14!

Thank you for sharing your son’s excellent first year experience at Cal Poly. It is great to hear that your son was able to get the classes he needed and that he had excellent professors. CP sounds like the perfect place for him!

How did he like Cerro Vista? Was he glad to live there his first year? Any final tips for students who have hopes to live there too?

Congrats on your second son graduating as well. You are a very busy mom! Enjoy the summer with your boys!

My son liked Cerro Vista, especially the privacy of having his own room. One of his roommates was his best friend from high school. The two of them plus 3 other students have rented a house off-campus to live in next year. It’s not really clear to me what the great appeal of this is, although it will be slightly less expensive than the dorms + meal plan. I think Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village are great living options for students.

Final tips for Cerro Vista? Well, the roommates will either work things out among themselves, or not. My son said that 2 of the roommates never really did their share of keeping the kitchen clean, but I guess they all just lived with a certain amount of dirty dishes. The end of the school year is a great time to pick up furniture and kitchen items!

Thank you again for sharing your son’s experience. I know you have shared other times about the dorms and school. I can imagine that there will be some students who are neater than others and do more of their share of the work. Like you said, they have to work that out. I hope my son does his share.

Good luck to your son and roommates in their own place next year. They will be ready because they had the transition of the Cerro dorms this past school year.
