oh god… I didn’t know they would be coming out with applications that quickly! So not prepared for this!

anyone get an acceptance letter?

personally, i feel that my test scores/gpa were pretty lacking in comparison to the other applicants. looking back at previous posts on this thread, many of hshsp’s attendees had perfect scores. i was pretty confident about my essays and recs, and i thought they could balance out my gpa flaws…

also, they sent me a confirmation email saying that they had received all of my application materials, so it’s impossible for someone to be rejected because of missing materials i think.

don’t be too worried yet, though! i’m sure many of you made it in :)

would you mind posting your stats? I just wanted to see if I could have even the slightest chance of getting in because my scores aren’t that great either…

If anyone got any acceptance letters, then my previous theory is moot, and we can assume a high degree of superficiality when it comes to admissions.

This is due to the fact that, if a single person was accepted, then all of the applications must have been reviewed to have a fair method of choosing the accepted. If all of the applications were reviewed, then they would not be sending out the decisions in waves. Therefore they are left at a logical conundrum, as any option dealing with acceptances they have would be highly unfair based on the competitive and comparative methodology behind the acceptances of this program. They, for the sake of equity in acceptances, have probably not accepted anyone yet.

Therefore, I would find it highly unlikely that anyone actually received an acceptance letter yet, and I think that, at this point, only the applicants that forgot vital information in their application or those who were severely below the average were rejected. This conclusion was, again, derived from the comparative nature of applications as the average students could not have been rejected without a proper comparison which would not be possible in this short time - further exemplified by the very small number of rejections arriving at this moment and the promptness of these notifications.

So, if you are not waaay below average, or if you did not forget any vital part of your application, then you are fine for the time.
I hope that some are consoled by this logic, even though, at this point, the fact that they are already rejecting applicants is quite stressful.

That being said, would some of the people rejected please post their stats, or post anything they might have forgotten from their application - just to test my hypothesis.

Thank You

gpa: 3.5 unweighted, 3.8 weighted

for standardized testing, i think i gave psat and sat subject scores.
psat: 214ish
math level ii: 800
chem: 730

in the “anything else you would like me to know about you” section, i mentioned that i’ve been doing science fairs for around 12 years, including some awards and science-related leadership positions.

hope this helps!

I dont want to offend anyone, but UMTYMP2015, i think they first send out rejections to the people they knew 100% they would not accept in the end, and acceptances to those who blew them away. Then, as the pool becomes more narrow, i think more of us will find out.

Im definitely not positive…but ive read a lot of these forums already and thats what i can deduce!

Ahh so sorry! I didn’t realize that you posted again before i submitted that comment. I think your hypothesis is true though!

i completely agree, sechukie! also, keep in mind that not everyone who applied to hshsp will be on college confidential, so i’m guessing that there’s probably one or two students who received acceptances today that just haven’t come across this thread.

And I was having a stress-free spring break so far. Checking my email compulsively now haha

Thanks!
So far, your application actually looks really good.
12 years of science fairs shows a great interest in the subject, and your awards and positions show a proficiency in your field.

Maybe they expected SAT scores, and not just PSAT. But I really don’t know…

wow, now I’m a bit scared, though I guess I’m relieved I wasn’t immediately rejected. I had decent stats i think… PSAT (225-235) and 4.0 UW/4.33W, top 2% of class, good recs.
We’ll see; I’m just going to stay optimistic.

Anyone else mind posting stats?

eek…I’m like freaking out…I only sent my ACT score and I got a 35 on that… 3.8943 unweighted gpa… pretty good recs and okay essays… guess I’m not getting in

35 ACT isn’t bad (I only sent PSAT); idk about the GPA, but you have a fair chance if you’re in AP or something.

yeah…i took ap bio and ap psych last year… and this year im taking ap chem, ap world, and ap calc. would that really help though? i feel like ap’s wouldnt be a deciding factor

I had good stats, but I didn’t really put most of my extracurriculars into the app now that I think about it. No research experience, but I started a scientific journal club that I never mentioned…

Stats:
4.0 UW
36 ACT
2390 SAT
800 Math 2 and 800 Chemistry

But I don’t think my essays were good enough for this. Anyways, we’ll see!

It’s not particularly helpful, but it’s a valid reason for a 3.9 GPA, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. With a 35 ACT, the main deciding factor will be your essay

Pretty funny how I’m giving advice/info when I have no clue at all if I have a chance…

would anyone care to post their essays? just for fun :)

I don’t think that’s a good idea; someone from HSHSP could possibly see this… wait till after decisions.

oh right… didn’t even think of that… lol goes to show how smart i really am ;)
