High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

I am not like a USAMO or MOP person, but I qualified for AIME 3 times. And I got a 7 on the AIME. Like I said, I like math and am sort of good at it, but I am not totally passionate about it. I am interested in the medical and biological field. I am just asking if I should put these because these might differentiate me in the applicant pool.

Also, did anyone get acceptances?

If you think you should in include it, like if it’s big in your life, then i feel like emailing Dr Richmond can’t hurt.
Idk about differentiation though, i knew a few people who applied to HSHSP in the last few years, and most applicants did take the AMC and local Olympiads in science as well - they said it did not help that much because so many people in this already self selecting applicant group already have it.

so would not including it make me less than the rest? i honestly didn’t think it is that important, but i don’t want to take chances. i mean, i would include it in a college app, but i thought only science-related awards should be placed here. i made it pretty clear in my essays that if i am selected, i would do something bio-related. my mom just suggested i should have included it because it may show me to be well-rounded and what not.

Well, most of the people from the last few years that I know included the info about AMC and F=ma and stuff, but then again most of them were rejected.

I mean, it can’t hurt to show that you have other interests outside of biology and stuff. It can’t hurt to give them a list of your other achievements, but it can always help.

So, I should update?

And also, @UMTYMP2015‌, how do you know what the rejection letter said about the 300 applicants and 24 spots? I do not think the 24 sports is true, because in the past few years, they have been steadily increasing the number of people accepted. Like last year, I think 28 were accepted or something. I thought/ hoped 30 were going to be accepted this year because I know an abundant amount of stellar kids applying.

well
i literally just got my rejection letter. :|

And it said about 24 spots out of 300+ applicants…

SAT: 2240 (M720, V740, W780)
PSAT 217 (M78, V70, W69)

GPA: 3.8/4.0

5 AP Exams taken
5 in AP Calc AB
5 in AP Calc BC
4 in AP Stats
4 in AP Comp Sci
4 in AP Micro

This year I’ve taken AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, Linear Algebra, and a few other humanities and literature AP courses.

I am on my Science Olympiad Team

I placed 3rd in Designer Genes and Forensics in a Regional Competition
I got 9th and 10th place in Designer Genes and Technical Problem Solving at a State Competition.

I volunteer at PROP, and Science Fairs.
I have had prior research experience in Genetics.

Umm, my essays were alright. I talked about a book called “Outliers, a story of success” which is a book about working hard and stuff - the essay was alright.
My other essay was a personal one describing my dreams and stuff. It was alright

Umm, so anyone still in the running, take solace in the fact that you have one less competition.
Anyone like me, well, we are rejected together lol

If there is any info that you want me to post
then like, tell me or something lol.

Can you post or pm me your essays? Thanks!

Yeah I didn’t particularly explain things like that and am sort of regretting it^
I basically sent the materials that they asked for and that’s it so :/

so still no acceptances?

Nope. Not rejected either, so keeping the dream alive haha

Rejected 2 days ago with 2300 sat, 35 act, USACO Gold Division, 2nd in astronomy in science olympiad state, 1st in class (i go to a no-name public school lol) but no research experience
good luck all.

OMG scared… did you apply for SSP? you would be a good fit there.

@Jugglebrosjr cannot be true. First rejections came yesterday, not Monday. With your stat it is possible to get rejected but should not be in the first wave.
Are you sure you are talking about HSHSP of MSU? Not Garcia or Clark?

Ugh I’m so nervous…

I think everyone is :-). It’s honestly a lot more nerve wracking than I expected.

If they send out rejections in waves, then do acceptances all come at once at the end?

@ParentOfUtahBoy Nvm the letter was dated 4/7 but I received the email 7 hours ago

Yeah I got rejected today too. Trying not to cry as I am now rejected from every summer program that I applied to…I really hope I can still do some sort of science research this summer though.
If anyone cares about stats, I hope this gives some sort of insight.

GPA 4.0 UW; my school does not calculate weighted GPA or class rank. I would say it is a relatively difficult public school.
SAT 2250
Math II 800
UMTYMP Calculus III student (dunno if anyone has actually heard of this program, but it’s an accelerated college math program at the University of Minnesota)
AP Chem, AP Human Geo, AP Calc AB & BC, AP Chinese, AP Psychology, AP US History, AP Biology, AP Government, AP Comparative Politics, AP Microeconomics, AP Statistics
Currently taking AP Physics and AP English Lang/Comp
I did not include my AP scores in the application, but all are 5s except one.
Stanford Shumway Internship (CSSSI) last summer.
I do quite a lot of ECs and volunteering but for some reason I didn’t bother to mention them in my app.
Essays, meh, this is subjective. If anyone wants to read them I guess I would be okay with that.
Recs, I have no idea.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting for decisions :)

Has anyone heard of someone who has been accepted?

I don’t think so. Judging from general responses on this thread and past years I think that we still have a few days before acceptances start coming out.
