Nerve-wracking is the word of the day.

I just wouldn’t worry about it (though I’m having difficulty following my own advice). We probably have a few days before acceptances come out, there’s plenty of time to get worried then.

Don’t worry guys she sends out acceptances throughout the month of April. I got mine on like the 30th.

So I only included my PSAT scores in my app because that was all I’d taken at the time. If I received SAT scores should I send those in somehow?

I only included PSAT scores too. I think it should be fine unless your PSAT scores are much lower than your SAT scores.

I just received my acceptance 2 mins ago.

I just got accepted as well!!! Best day ever. OMG

Here is the acceptance letter for anyone:

10 April 2014

Dear _____,

Congratulations! I am very pleased to inform you that you have been selected to participate in the 2014 High School Honors Science-Engineering-Mathematics Research Program at Michigan State University! At the end of this e-mail is an acceptance form.

…stuff about payment…

Your acceptance obligates you not only to attend, but to attend for the full duration of the program (Sunday, 22 June - Saturday, 9 August) without taking any time off for another activity. Unfortunately, because of the intense nature of the program, late arrivals cannot be permitted. Information about available research projects, housing, transportation, and other sundry details, will be sent in mid-May to those who have indicated that they will be attending. Feel free to e-mail any questions or concerns that arise.
I congratulate you, your family, and your teachers for your interest in research and your fine academic performance; I look forward to your participation in the HSHSP this summer. (Remember to share this electronic letter with your parents!)

Sincerely,

Dr. Gail Richmond

I got in too!!! Hey @jjonthom99 lol I was expecting the ssp email not this!

Sorry about not posting this sooner. Super excited and my hands were shaking so much…!!

Here are my stats:

SAT: 2340
Bio II: 790
AP: Biology (5), Gov (5), CS (5)
Current APs: English Lang, WHAP, Chem, Psych, Calc C
GPA: 4.0

Location: Maryland
Race: white/Asian
Gender: female

Applied a few days before the deadline.

I said I wanted to major in bio/biochem. I have no research experience and nothing huge like Bio Olympiad or even Science Olympiad. However, I’m pretty involved in my school’s computer science program.

Ultimately, I think I got in because of essays and teacher recommendations. The teachers I asked to write letters have really good relationships with me, and I’ve had one of them for 3 years. I wrote about how my view of science changed and how I hope to better other’s lives. My other essay was about a book that actually changed my life. It was about the role of women in the military and how they used being underestimated and discriminated against as drive to achieve more.

Good luck to all those still waiting for decisions! Just remember that you don’t need an insane amount of research experience, perfect test scores, or anything like that. As long as you truly enjoy science, I think you have a shot!

Looking forward to seeing some of you this summer!!

@aops100 Yeah haha same! Do you think you would rather do this or SSP? I am completely flustered!

To anyone in the future, don’t be afraid if you have no research experience when applying, I got in without anything except basically my essays and teacher recs! Best of luck to everyone still waiting on a decision!

If I wasn’t accepted or rejected, what does that mean?

Congratulations @kitkat8127 ! I’m so nervous! I don’t think I’m going to get in though… Would you mind posting your stats?

^^ lol I didn’t even realize that this posted like 30 minutes late…

Any rejections today?

I was accepted also

I didn’t have wonderful stats, but did have “research experience”. I mean I didn’t do a full-blown project or anything. I just assisted in a lab and learned various lab methods.

My recommendations were pretty good. One of the teachers I have known since freshman year, and I did a lot of science competitions with him. He is also my teacher this year, and I talk with him a lot. My other recommendation was also good. I am a talkative person and I have good relationships with all my teachers.

My essays were a bit flowery, but they really showed my personality. My book wasn’t science-related, but I made it connect in the end to why I wanted to pursue research. My science passion essay was also sort of cliche, but I had voice that showed my seriousness about what I was saying.

I didn’t really put a list of my accomplishments, which I regretted. Other than that, all I can say is write essays that truly reflect you and your passion. I think stats only need to be good enough to a certain point and after that, essays and recommendations are what truly play a role.

Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get in, you guys will definitely go on to accomplish great things in the future! To those accepted, I am looking forward to meeting you guys this summer! And good luck to future applicants and those who haven’t received their decisions yet!

Rejected today. Bit disappointed, but congratulations to everyone who did get in!

@jonthom99 I was rejected from SSP but if I had to choose, I think I would go to HSHSP because I’m more into bio/chem than physics

@aops100 See you at HSHSP then! get hype
