While I'm currently in the highest math class (PreCalculus) available for my grade (11), I do not intend to take AP Calculus next year. I intend to take basic Stats I & Stats II. Also, I receive B's in math related classes such as PreCalc & Lab Physics but A's in AP Lit, AP Gov & Spanish 4. Is math held of high importance in the admissions process for a Film major at NYU (or any school)? I mean, will it hurt my chances to be accepted for film if I do not take the highest math class for my senior year but take 4 other non-math AP classes?

If anybody has any kind of idea about this it would be greatly appreciated.

I’m also a prospective NYU student for film, and so I don’t know from first hand experience, however, in order to get into their film school, you have to get into NYU first. AP will always look best, so I think you should go with AP calc or AP stats. Although you would be a film major, they require the academics for the initial acceptance to NYU. Hope this helps.

I’m a freshman in Dramatic Writing, and I flat-out DROPPED math my senior year of high school. I was in PreCalc 1st semester (don’t judge - I had a 98%) and dropped it second semester because I just didn’t want to deal with it. Once I got into NYU, I emailed them asking if I could drop (even though I had 2 months earlier…oops) - they actually said no, then I argued a little bit, and they said it was okay because my major was so math-lenient.

That’s just me, though. Bottom line: you seem to be doing very well, and taking whatever math class will be best suited to you can only help. I can’t imagine they’ll fault you for not taking the highest class. Don’t worry about it!

D is a freshman in Studio Art (Steinhardt) but both film and art have a similar 50% academics/50% talent component for admissions.

D was doing poorly in pre-calc junior year, so ended up dropping math entirely that year. She picked up math again as a senior, but took “College Algebra” which is an easier class.
