"High School" Math Class -- Redefine?

Have you all noticed that an awful lot of middle schoolers are running around going, "I'M SO SMART. I'M IN A HIGH SCHOOL MATH CLASS!" and then when we ask what math class they're in, they say, "ALGEBRA 1!"

Most people in my district finish Algebra 1 at the end of 8th grade -- the advanced people finish Geo Honors by the end.

Anyone else irked?

Warning

This is a thread ripe for flaming

Hopefully people don’t start flaming?

Hey, I finished 8th grade with only Alg 1 to my name, and I turned out fine.
Nowadays… it’s sort of sad to see that sort of arrogance, and then these freshman fail geometry.
Tbh, I help the people who took geometry in middle school.

Yeah  The people I’m talking about are running around saying that everyone else is so stupid and that they’re the best in the class or something.

Ugh.

Society has become sad. :/

the reason I said that was because there have been past threads (cant remember title,
anyone else?) that basically said something like “Oh, im so annoyed at these stupid people who think that getting into so and so college is such an accomplishment when it’s not” and they got SO FLAMED

I remember the thread you’re talking about.

That was bad.

Eh, well, in my area people take Algebra I in 9th grade, so they’re technically right. It’s still a good achievement to be a year or two ahead.

A slightly different question: what’s a college math class? I see almost everybody here took AP calc, and a lot of people taking multivariable.

Well… College math typically starts out at the Calculus level.

So Calculus is a college math class.

For those mathematically advanced people, they may take classes beyond that such as linear algebra, differential equations, multivariable calculus, and etc.

I know someone who took precalc freshman year, then calc bc and stat sophmore year, and now is talking the even harder calculus stuff.

So during senior year he isn’t going to have any math. He only is going to have 2 years of history

I school my school’s math whizzes at History.

It’s funny, because when you juxtapose these two statements there seems to be a sense of hypocrisy/irony.

It’s sorta funny how you decide to comment on a majority of things I say.

But on with the topic of the thread… Alg 1 is becoming more common in middle school.

lol

Anyway, at my middle school algebra I was the maximum level of math you could take without having to go to the high school, so it wasn’t a high school course. I believe my middle school is now offering geometry as well.

wow…
at my school, the “dumb” sequence is Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalc, Calc AB

most people do Algebra 2, Precalc, Calc BC, stats and/or Multivariable
