Is it important to join in high school sport? I'm not an athletic person so I don't really want to. Is it gonna affect the decision of the college board?

My friend isn't an athlete...but she heard that colleges would really put it against her if she didn't do a sport. She tried field hockey...it was the most miserable summer/fall of her life. She didn't do it, just did the things she does like - writing/art clubs.

well a sport is just an EC that shows commitment

many of the valedictorians from my school don't do sports, but they act, or play an instrument well, or have some other activities outside of academics

also if you just do a sport for college, most colleges can see through that. just be the best YOU that you can be. show colleges your personality, your uniqueness; don't show colleges that you will mold yourself just so you might have a better chance at getting into the said college

i had a question about recruited athletes for college:

do colleges specially recruit athletes? or is it more like the student applies and wishes to join the team, and is accepted because of the sport? i'm a bit confused on the concept.

thanks for your reply. even if I join a sport does it matter if it for one year only or it it has to be continuous?

if you're joining a sport, it would look much better if it was a continuous activity, so it would show that you have interest & passion. why would you only join for one year?

Colleges recruit kids they really want. Starts in junior year- they contact you. But you can also contact the school directly.

Sports aren't that important. If you have something else you show committment that's good. Sports are a real committment. That's the major importance of them.

since I'm a junior already and I had never join any sport before. I'm debating whether to join it or not.

ohh. well in that case, it doesn't hurt to join anyway. shows that you're willing to try something new.

I just want to warn you - it will take up a lot of your time. Don't plan on showing up once a week and putting it on your application. On the other hand, it is an awesome experience if you are willing to put in the work.

it just that the only thing that shows my committment is choir. Hopefully I will take it all four years, but the problem is that i'm not planning on major in music.

yeah like everyone says, it's just another 'commitment' EC to put on. I've seen plenty of people get into top schools with no sports. They might've been extremely weak in the sports field but they probably were extremely strong in the music field or soemthing.
