Is a high school sport worth it? I like playing the sport, but it's not my "life"; i can live without it.

What EC's/leadership positions would be considered "equal" or better than a JV or Varsity sport?

Practices are every day of the week(except game days), and they are about 2 hours long. I'd be exhausted once I come home, eat, and start my homework/studying.

I've heard that colleges don't value sports as much as they should(with how much commitment is required).. is this true?

If colleges see that you can balance out school and sports that’s a good thing. I’m currently doing a sport for the first time and I got to admit my grades are mostly B’s at the moment but the season is almost done anyways.

From what I understand, colleges consider a sport as a fairly neutral activity; it doesn’t really add to your application because it’s not really a scholarly pursuit, but they acknowledge the time that it takes up and will consider that when evaluating your other ECs.

So: play a sport if you enjoy it, but by no means feel obligated to play if you don’t enjoy it, or if you feel it negatively impacts your grades too much.

It’s an extracurricular just like any other extracurricular. My high school sport was pleasantly unathletic and coached by a history teacher nearing retirement. It was awesome. But I loved curling. Any other sport and I definitely wouldn’t have stuck with it.

From my experience from playing 2 varsity sports in high school (I am a senior now) and maintaining a high GPA (2nd in class out of 186), I have enjoyed every second of it. It has taught me how to time manage, communicate with my teachers when I am feeling too much pressure, communication skills and has also taught me tolerance. If you decide to play, in the end, you will not regret it. Oh and not once did I make the sport I was playing “my life”. It’s important to place other things first instead of sports.

i can’t even get an a in gym… i injured my partner while playing tennis because my racket bounced off the net and yeah idk how it really happened but i am the least athletic person on earth

How significant are sports to you?

Do you have the potential to be great at your particular sport?

From what you’ve said, sports seem to be relatively important, but they’re not everything, so I think you should think about the potential of the EC as a whole and ow much you enjoy it. If you think you can become amazing (nationally ranked athlete) by all means, stick with it. If you really enjoy it, then stick with it.

I can’t imagine playing a sport, I have so little free time and I don’t even have that many EC’s just so much homework. I don’t know how some people do it.

I mean I like playing sports. As for potential to be great, I am definitely not good enough to be nationally ranked… I don’t know. I’ll see how it goes
