I am a high school senior looking for a summer internship before I go off to college in the economics/finance field in Atlanta. I seem to be having trouble as most internships are reserved for college students only or for American Indian/Hispanic/Black minority high school students.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I even sent my resume out on monster.com but when a company contacted me for a possible interview after reading over my resume, they told me to put off that interview because I was under 18. I have no idea what to do from here; I was hoping for an internship program in this field, but I have not found one yet.

Try some local firms. As a highschooler and someone under 18, you will have trouble finding an internship at a large or more well known firms because what they are looking for are mature (agewise and gradewise) individuals who can live and work on their own. It is also difficult for you to find an internship because they expect most high schoolers and college freshman to lack the skills the companies are seeking for. I am college freshman and it is even difficult for me to find an internship without relying on family contacts. Most people get their first internships sophomore or junior year.

If I were you, I would work this summer and the summer after freshman year to save money for internships later. Remember, unless you get an internship close to home, you are on your own. You drive to work, rent your own apartment, feed yourself, and pay your own bills. A summer internship is a test of your ability to survive on your own after you finish college. Also, it is a learning experience.
