I was wondering the how important are all four years of high school. Is it true that someone can slightly mess up sophomore year with no consequences and is it true that senior year is just as important as junior year?

The best is to do well all four years. Next best is to have a steady rising trend (from a not-too-low base) over all four years. If you must get mediocre grades, make sure you get them in indisputably difficult courses. Senior year is important; colleges generally ask about it before making final admission offers.

anything else?

It depends on the college. Some counts Junior year more , and some counts Senior year more. Messed up is relative, How bad is the GPA? 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5?

tokenadult is correct. If you had a mess-up sophomore year, you’ll need to explain it. (Don’t whine about it, but a succinct “I had mono for 3 months” or “a close friend had a medical crisis” would be sufficient. If you don’t have a good reason, perhaps you could say, “I made some mistakes my sophomore year and didn’t put my best efforts into my work; I have learned from my error and rededicated myself to my studies” or something similar but not quite so stuffy.)
