So I'm on solar just checking out what courses are available for Spring 2012 and it's interesting. Although Stony Brook mentions that they teach Elementary
Hindi and a variety of other Hindi courses, it seems as if no Hindi courses are available at all next semester. As a matter of fact, as I'm searching for classes that were available Fall and Spring 2011, I'm noticing that it wasn't available these past couple of semesters either. Any admins or current students know what the deal is here?

They might not be offering it due to instructor issues. Contact the linguistics department to find out exactly why it’s not available.

Thank you, but I really don’t think the Linguistics department administers foreign language courses. (Refer to the department website, and course offerings) As a matter of fact, as I’m reading more and more about this department, there is no indication that they would know any more about the status of the elementary foreign language courses than any other department. So, if you checked that before posting, I can’t imagine why you would have suggested to contact them. By the way, I’m sure I’m the only one who has this perception, but don’t people post here with questions as an alternative to sending and email to the school? Rhetorical question.

Haha, I am planning on taking Hindi as a language too to fulfill their requirements. If i don’t know any, do you know how many courses we are suppose to take? I want to be done with language taking as minimum number of courses in it as possible.

It should be fun! No?

Just pulled this from the Stony Brook website:

“All entering students who have not achieved entry-level foreign language competence are urged to complete this requirement early in their academic careers. Students achieve foreign language competence at Stony Brook in one of the following ways:
•Enrolling in and passing with a letter grade of C or higher the second semester of an elementary foreign language course numbered 101 or 112, or enrolling in and passing a foreign language course at the intermediate level or higher;
•Obtaining equivalent transfer credit for the second-semester introductory or higher level foreign language course, passed with a grade of C or higher;
•Passing a Stony Brook Challenge examination for a foreign language course numbered 101 or 112 or higher.”

Hope this helps!

That might be tough, I can speak a lot of hindi though but have no clue in reading/writing. I can prolly ace the class if you write in the english alphabet aka aap kaisey hain

Looks like we would have a bit of reading and writting to do. Yea I can definitely tell that the language is tough. My girlfriend and her family have taught me a very small amount of Gujarati, and while although different than Hindi, I’m sure the odd way of composing sentences is the same.

HIN 111 - Elementary Hindi I
“An introduction to spoken and written Hindi, stressing pronunciation, speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing. This course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the language. A student who has had two or more years of Hindi in high school (or who has otherwise acquired an equivalent proficiency) may not take HIN 111 without written permission from the supervisor of the course”

By the way, did you get your orientation date yet?

I didn’t even apply yet. I am planning on applying for the Fall 2012 cycle. Take Hindi fall 2012 semester, we can take it in same class and help each other out. Btw, you pre-med?

Transfer admissions work on a rolling basis after the priority date which was November 1st for Spring 2012 admission. If you’re not sure what that means, which I’m sure you do, my understanding is that it’s just another way of saying that they will review applications as they arrive. If they have space and you’re a qualified applicant, I’d speculate that you’re in. From what I’ve read though, each semester they have recieved an increased amount of applications from qualified students. Assuming that’s true, it’s possible that there isn’t much space left if any.

In regard to the pre-med question, yes I am!

I am getting a feeling that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship lol

Which school are you transferring from?

If you checked different websites, you would have also found contact information for individuals you should be projecting this question to.
