Historically black Knoxville College Debt-free Policy

I received this email from a person from the Urban League.

Subject: Historically black Knoxville College Debt-free Policy

Historically black Knoxville College, in east Tennessee, has reduced its tuition from $5,000 to $1,400 per student including room, board, and books!

All you need is $600 for the enrollment deposit and $800 can be paid in four monthly installments of $200 each.

The program is funded by corporate sponsors and guarantees a college education where students graduate debt free.

Enrollment requirements include a high school diploma and a 2.0/4.0 scale. If your student has below a 2.0, but you know they are college material, they may be considered provided they get three letters of recommendation.

For educators who will support their potential, all interested students must immediately contact the admissions office at
Knoxville College by dialing 1-800-743-5669 or by applying on line at:

<a href="http://www.knoxvillecollege.edu%5B/url%5D">www.knoxvillecollege.edu</a></p>

I also received that email through a listserv I'm on. One of the members responded saying that yes, while it is true, prospective applicants need to be really careful in taking Knoxville up on the offer because there are other issues and/or stipulations that one may not be aware of. It's been so long since I received that email I no longer remember what the issues are but will try to get that info again and will post it here if I do. Any potential applicant should ask a lot of questions and read the fine print, for sure.

if you can get the "fine print" information that would be great - I have several people I would like to tell about this program but want to make sure I know all about it so I can carefully explain it to the parents. Thanks for the heads up!

Knoxville College reserves the right to adjust charges as necessary to meet costs.

Commuting students and other students permitted to live off campus pay tuition and general fees and any special fees (see below) related to their course enrollments. To reserve their room, resident students are required to pay a non-refundable $50 room reservation fee, a $25 key deposit, and a $100 residence hall damage fee.

Charges to students are based on campus residency for an academic year. Adjustments to these charges are made for commuter students, married students, special students, and students entering or completing degree requirements at mid-year, enrolling for additional study, or registering for only one term. Students who begin a term as residents but who move off campus during the term are charged for room and board for the entire term. In making the initial payment of $50 the student and his/her parent or guardian acknowledge these terms and signify acceptance of these obligations.

No promise or contract that differs from these terms shall bind the College unless it has been approved by the President of Knoxville College. The College reserves the right to increase or reduce fees each year according to changing fiscal conditions.

Full payment of tuition and other fee charges entitles the student to a non-transferable identification card admitting him or her to all regular athletic events, artist series, drama productions, and musical recitals and concerts, and allows use of the library, student center, and other facilities.

Special Fees. Some courses which require extensive use of equipment and materials or which require the employment of special faculty for individualized instruction may carry additional fee assessments. All students are required to participate in the Work Program. Eligibility for other continuing Financial Aid is directly related to the student’s academic progress. The student’s academic progress is determined once a year at the end of the spring semester. If the student enrolls during the spring semester, s/he will have her/his academic progress measured at the end of two (2) consecutive semesters of study. In addition, a student must achieve a cumulative grade point average in accordance with Knoxville College academic standards for semester hours completed.

Financial Aid Probation and Suspension. If a student fails to meet the minimum academic progress requirements, that student will be placed on financial aid probation for the next succeeding year of enrollment. If the minimum requirements are still not met, the student will be placed on financial aid suspension and will not be eligible for future financial aid until the minimum cumulative requirements of the policy are attained.

Appeal and Reinstatement. A suspended student may be eligible to receive financial aid if the Academic Dean will confirm in writing that the student is in good standing and progressing academically. An appeal to explain mitigating circumstances can be submitted in writing to the Academic Dean and the student has a right to request a hearing before the Committee on Academic Appeals.

Student Academic Performance. Student academic performance is based upon the following:

Students will receive additional assistance and counseling during their probationary period. Students failing to remove themselves from academic probation within one semester may be suspended; barring unusual circum- stances, students will be allowed a maximum of two consecutive semesters on academic probation. All such unusual circumstances will be documented in students' records.

I posted this info on the college selection thread and I got some snobby responses like why would I go there when I can go to UT-Knoxville and comments like that.

Ok, it seems that the info I'd received previously and was referring to when I advised potential applicants to read the fine print basically has to do with all the financial woes the college has had. Unfortunately a few of the HBCUs have had a hard go of it, financially (FAMU is another that comes immediately to mind). A thorough investigation of financial stability of the institution, as well as its accredidations, would certainly be warranted and advised. If all is well this certainly could be an outstanding opportunity for some.

ACCREDITATION

Knoxville College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and associate degrees.

This is its regional accreditation.
