Sam Lee:
I’m not going to take gaokao because I have been preparing for SAT and applying to American colleges since August, 2009. I myself also think it’s amazing that I get such scores only by months of study. However, my high school is a traditional “gaokao school”. A female student from my school did get admitted to UST with full scholarship through the way you mentioned. I did pretty well in gaokao curriculum as well, but I’m sick of this education system. So I didn’t go to school in senior year, as many other Chinese applicants did.

What if you don’t get any scholarships from CUHK or HKUST? You got any backup plans? With your scores though, you may be able to get full-scholarships in some “safety” schools in the US but I don’t know if you have applied to any.

Sam Lee:
It does become a problem…I have applied to many LACs such as Colby, Bates, Lafayette, F&M, Dickinson and many others…

Sam Lee: Wow! No one ever mentioned gaokao before and I never came across it too so I didnt know it was such a big thing!
Its def not about memorization and that is where all my classmates disagree with me! I mean they would be standing outside the exam hall cramming Newtons laws at the last minute ! How can you ever memorize laws for ever unless you “UnderStand” them! beats me!

Good for me cause i’m not a figure skating champion and so wouldn’t have gotten any points for that! haha… but I know what you mean, cause i’m heavily into sports and outside the classroom activities, but I guess will just have to prioritize heavily at Uni …

Yeah I was planning to do that once finish my exams, like plan the tests that I will be taking and their respective dates…
I personally am against objective examinations, hence the poor SAT scores, but they seem to be a trend nowadays so gotta take them at least for now :)

edisonchan7: Do apply to some safety schools !!! Dont risk it! I had initially planned to apply to four top engineering universities and 2 safety schools, but then 4 turned into 16 top uni, and I just gave up the idea of safety schools ! Luckily I have made it to all the unis i applied, except my first choice! So what I mean is if I had only applied to my first choice uni, i would be sitting home for the next year waiting to apply again!!!

Sarthak19118:
I have applied F&M in ED2, chance me…

hey guys
I had applied to HKUST about more than one month ago and still didn’t heard anything from them.
do u guys think it is ok to e-mail them and ask weather I have chance or not, or just wait from them…
I had applied to QuantitativeFINance and economics and finance. have anyone go there?

@gogounivs-mate,i wouldn’t worry…I applied in early Dec too and haven’t heard anything since…U could email them but they ll say that your application is being processed, please wait…(I tried it many times)…
Expect Results only around late Feb or early March…
good luck…

@Sam Lee: Are you from HK?

gogounivs: You should definitely email them and check your application status, you could even call them. There is absolutely no harm in contacting them!!

System Failure: kya chal raha hai ?!? :D

edisonchan7: I know only very little about that one, so probably not the best person to chance! But I think you are definitely good for it with those SATs and GPA!!

Good Luck!

@Sarthak: Kuch nahi chal raha. My life’s so freaking boring na =P
So like Mech Engg was your first choice haan?

System Failure,
Yes, I am.

edisonchan,
Because you apply for FA, the usual standard no longer applies and even the “safeties” are no longer safe. So you may have to aim even lower to get the real safety. Colby and Bates would have been matches, if not safeties, for you but because you apply for FA, they may be reaches or even high reaches now, assuming they are not need-blind for internationals. These schools have budgeted a very limited fund for internationals and it all depends on how many internationals are applying for FA. These applicants are sorted and placed in a separate pool. On the other hand, there are few schools that may be “need-blind” (at least that’s what they claim to be) for internationals so your application for FA doesn’t affect your chances. I am not saying your chances are bad; I am saying it’s impossible to guage.

Good luck!

Sam Lee,
Thank you very much. You are so nice~

System Failure: i’m just gonna skip tht Q here and mail you the reply instead, yahan pe kuch bolo to atleast 10 log phir aur Q karte hain! lol

heyyy guys,
sry ive already asked a similar q before.
if i applied to HKUST after the early decision deadline (i applied jan 15),
will i be expecting my results to be released in may or june?
How about HKU? I applied jan 15.

for HKUST it should be May if not before…
HKU no idea!

Hi Everyone,

-Fer Luci

Hey evrybody! I just received an offer from HKUST for Engineering in fall 2010. Can anyone tell me how the Engineering course at HKUST is like? And how does it compare with the course at HKU?

Hey Fer Luci =D

@LordXXX: Heya! Congrats on the offer! When did you apply and what cirrculum are you doing? Oh and which Engg Dept did you get into? For Engg, I suppose HKUST is better than HKU. But otherwise, HKU is awesome :)

Hey Fre Luci! you know you can join the thread conversation now that you have given us a ‘brief’ intro of yourself to us :)

System Failure: first of all, where have you been? My parents are in Hk, and will be checking out the HKUST campus around the 6th or 7th feb! And you dont even wanna compare HKUST with HKU!! I mean if you blatantly disregard the prestigious rankings and student reviews, which i’m not sure why anyone would do, then only can you even think about having this conversation! cause HKUST is “the best” engineering school in Hk!! haha… not even joined yet and already fighting for the honour of HKUST!! go UST! :)

which brings me to a VERY interesting question: “What is the team mascot/ sports team name for HKUST ?!”
