Hofstra To Penn State? Is It Possible?

Right now i am a freshman at hofstra university. Judging by the price of the school, i really feel like i'm not getting my money or education that $30,000 should get me. As of now i'm getting all A's and 1 or 2 B's out of 15 credits (5 classes) and am considering transfering to Penn State University Park to study engineering (Civil/Environmental). I'm originally from PA so it would not be expensive for me to go to PSU. If i get a 3.6 or 3.8 my first sememster is Penn State a possibility? i know they only accept about 40% of their transfer apps, but with something like a 3.8 i figure that has to better my chances of getting in. I am applying fall 2006 and also considering summer courses. Anyone know of a similar situation? I'm also considering UVA, VT, and Pitt. Somebody shed some light for me?

I wish I could answer your questions, but I have no idea. I did want to ask you, though, what you don't like about the school, and what you do like(pros and cons). Are frats still very big here? Is it true that there are a lot students that like to spend their parent's money on designer clothing and expensive cars? Overall are students cold or friendly (I realize there are all types everywhere)? Is the neighborhood still a little bit unsafe? How long do kids live on campus? Do you enjoy the classes? Any of this information would be appreciated. How is the writing and math lab, or tutoring? If you would rather pm me about Hofstra, feel free. Thanks.

Well, hofstra in general is a decent school. Night life is great, campus is wonderful. Hofstra looks very good on paper. As far as my experience goes, the people (especially the girls) are fairly stupid and materialistic. The people are friendly, but everyone seems to only care about themselves. The people who are here seem to be under the impression that an education at hofstra will make them a great deal of money without putting very much effort into it. When they graduate they're in for a rude awakening. Alot of mercedes, bmw's, and expensive imports can be found in the parking lot. Frats are looked at as a joke from what i can tell. Had i been at another university i might have decided to join one, but here they're not considered prestigous or a whole lot of fun. As far as Hempstead being unsafe, it is like everyone says, unsafe. Hofstra make's it impossible to get basic dorm needs without blowing tons of money on a meal plan because target is NOT walking distance. Your standard bottle of polland spring water costs $1.60 here. They're about $0.89 a bottle back home. A car is important at hofstra. I. E., the island is expensive. Night life is wonderful, if you have daddy's money. I spent the entire summer saving for this place and i'd rather not waste it away at one of the 5 local bars within walking distance, though they still remain popular. The academics so far seem to be a breeze. Either i'm extremely prepared for college, or it's just not that hard. I went out 4 nights last week and still managed a 90 on my french exam, a 92 on my western civ essay, and a 99 on a math test. I do like my professors. tutoring i will PM you about when i get one (economics is shakey.. teacher isn't very good but i can still manage to pull an A if i get that extra studying).

Hofstra is very easy to "like" as a student. Easy classes, good business and comunication school, GREAT night life, but i've learned to see threw it. I will not be here next year no matter what, but i will have fun here, and as of now i know i will excel as long as i keep it up. I hope this helps you.

Pridelion, This helped a lot. Thank you for your report. The good thing is that you are able to have fun and still keep up the gpa. Keeping the gpa up will get you into another school, if that is what you want. Isn't Hofstra connected w internships in NY? Why do you want to transfer? I Is it bcs you feel that you are not learning what you should be in the classes? Is it bcs class discussions are nonexistant bcs of the students? Also, do some kids live on campus all 4 years, or do they move off? What % of kids have cars that do live on campus? Is this a suitcase school, meaning that the school clears out for weekends? Thanks again. I wish you luck. Keep in mind that Penn State is huge!

My decision has a lot to do with my major. Hofstra's engineering school (which isnt' even a school) is a joke. It's included under the liberal arts category for major and they do not have the internships or co-ops that Hofstras business school and comuncations schools so greatfully boast. For $15,000 less i can get a better education and be ensured a job in the future due to my connections in the field (i worked for a civil engineer during the summer all threw high school). I am very aware that Penn State is huge. Hofstra has around 10,000 students and i feel that it's a bit small. I am a huge people person. Suitcase school? Yes, it can feel like one, but theres still plenty of people left. MANY commuters come to Hofstra from places like Queens, the Bronx, and the island. It seems that kids do live on campus all four years. I know plenty of athletes and seniors who find off campus housing very hard to aqiure or even get used too. Some appartments are avalible east of campus but they are in a run down area that i would not want to live in. The suites around the building are basically mock appartments. It's basically 2 dorms with a common area with a kitchen to share with the entire building. Not exactly an apartment, but students including myself like them. Class discussion is there, i just feel like i'm one of few people who does the required work, and i'm not exactly a book worm. The truth is that this University, and i stand by my point, is not worth the $30,000 invested. I just feel that Hofstra can not fulfill my academic needs. I came here undecided leaning towards business and a comunication major, but now that i have my mind made up i feel like Penn State is the place where i should be. My hearts just not in it here.

Your reasoning makes sense to me. Good luck. I am sorry that I could not help you as to whether you will likely gain admission. I would apply to a few other schools with goodengineering programs if I were you.
