Hollywood's stereotype that HS/Sr. year is "best time of your life"

I remember hearing a comedian talk about this once. He said he was talking to his guidance counselor about this. The GC said the stereotypical "HS is the best time of your life." The comedian proceeds to say, "How can it be? I can't drive. I can't drink. I'm a virgin. If these are the best years of my life, kill me now." Or something to that effect. Can't say I totally agree, but there is some truth in the joke.

Senior year-Most STRESSFUL year, but definitely the MOST FUN!

haha. I definitely have to say senior year is my favorite year of all so far, but that's just my perspective. I don't go to wild parties and hang out with my friends all the time as portrayed by the typical high school movie- I'm actually working 2 jobs, an internship, clubs, college apps, plus schoolwork... but I dunno, it works for me. All the same, I'm incredibly tired of high school (senioritis, yay!) and I know that college will be 1000% better (once again, my outlook on life). And anyways, I'm getting accumulated to all the stress and lack of sleep-cuz I'm sure that college will be the same, if not worse(as far as having too much stuff to do)!

High school to me has been very neutral. Not amazing, but nothing horrible either. I mean its not that crazy fun.

LOL Angel Sushi. :D

It's funny to think that when I was in elementary school, I thought that I would be so cool and mature in high school...I would party every night, drive an awesome car, be fully developped and wear short mini skirts with high heels, and have boys at my feet....(I think I'm describing "Mean Girls", lol).

Haha, not! I found out that high school isn't fun and games. I'd have to say that high school has not been the best time of my life because of all the studying and stress. High school is also when hormones are raging like crazy and tend to cause one to be in the dumps easily. :P

Thus, I blame the hormones!

hahaha Mean Girls<3

hmmm yeah they overdramatize it, no doubt about that. I sincerely hope high school is not the best time of my life, because that would be depressing, lol.
like I have friends, I hang out, it's fun.....it's also stressful. haha. I got to the dances and all, but I'm not a partier/drink/drugs and that crap. But life is so much more than high school. I'm more focused on doing well so that I could go to a great college and have a fantastic time!
I'm looking forward to college---I think the fact that your parents aren't around 24/7 and your friends are all closeby and you have that freedom and all makes a big difference.
Plus I want to study abroad in the UK during college, which would be amazing and beat h.s. by 123456789 times, lol.

I would think your 20s are the best time of your life. you're still young, but old enough to be independent

Eh, high school's okay. I haven't fallen in love, had any fairytale adventures, or spontaneously become a published novelist. But I've also never been bullied, sexually harrassed, pestered by a drug pusher, or emotionally abused by a troupe of Barbie clones. That's got to count for something. XD

I personally love high school.

High school is honestly what you make of it.

If you sit at home all day, with your nose in a book, you're obviously not gonna find high school fun.

If you have fun, and do your work, high school is funn.

I think the problem with Hollywood movies is that the makers of the films aren't in high school any more so they've sort of forgotten how truly sucky it is (for a lot of people, at least). I've found even now that I'll look at an experience during which I might've been miserable with a fondness and a touch of nostalgia. So I can imagine the older you get, the more frequent and powerful this becomes.

One of my FAVORITE lines of any movie is in Little Miss Sunshine, when Frank says to Dwayne, "High school, those are your prime suffering years." No cheesy glorification, none of that. Of course, it was an indie film so some big studio exec wasn't breathing down their necks. Maybe that had something to do with it.

High school was good overall..but I have to say, personally, my senior year is TERRIBLE..but that has alot to do with school specific/friend specific changes..
I dunno..its what you make of it..if it is the best time in your life..well, then that kind of sucks..but its a nice, careless (for the most part), enjoyable, semi-chill time.

I repeat from Grey's Anatomy during the high school bus crash show. "Wow, high school does suck" from Marc Sloan.

I had a blast in high school. I really didn't have a blast freshman year because I just moved to San Francisco. I got a clean slate but it didn't work well because I was caught up on other things. I'm having a blast now so high school does rock. I'm not going to wild parties, getting drunk and high every other week but I'm still having a great time nonetheless. College will certainly be more fun though.

lmao...I hear ya alamode. I totally thought high school was going to be like something out of a "Sweet Valley High" novel, and I was going to be Jessica

"High school was good overall..but I have to say, personally, my senior year is TERRIBLE..but that has alot to do with school specific/friend specific changes.."

lalala, I have to agree. I'm a senior and 2007 was basically a downward trend. I haven't hung out with any of my friends over break which I guess is my own fault, but people change. I'm looking forward to UChicago though so whatever.

I think that it is difficult for many people on this site to say that it was/is 'the best time of your life' simply because we are all very academically focused and stress out about everything. This is not meant to be a stereotype From what I have gathered most of the people who say it was the best time of their life are primarily talking about the social aspect of it which some of us might be lacking because of how seriously we take school, getting into college, getting a good job, etc. And as for senior year I think it all depends. Who is going to have more fun: the guy/girl with 5 APs and 2 dual enrollment classes at the local CC or the guy/girl with Regular English, Economics, Foods, TA and then goes home? It obviously isn't guaranteed and is possible to achieve both, but hopefully you see my point. Sorry if I offended anyone as that was definitely not my intention.

I love high school. Not sure what the future holds...but seriously, last year with all your close childhood friends, still no pressure of living on your own, the last half doesn't really count, you're choosing colleges or future life decisions...what's not to like?

My HS sucks, Seniors honestly have zero privileges. We have a closed campus and we aren't allowed to order food from delivery. We have this place called the Senior Lounge in the cafe, its like a huge cardboard box that was promised to have games and fun stuff in there, it has 2 couches, 2 tvs and cheap seats that needed to be replaced every week, and oh yeah graffiti on the walls everyday. Our principle wouldn't let our grade go outside to the soccer field to see the boys varsity team play in the semi-finals for county championships unless our teachers allows us to. 1 teacher in the entire school took their class outside. Honestly, it is the same thing as being a junior without all the work, my school blows.

I love high school, too. Being a senior is amazing. This is going to sound cheesy, but I feel as if I've "conquered" HS. I feel so comfortable everywhere... and all of my extracurriculars are so social and fun (cross country, track, band- even though there are some extremely obnoxious people in band, there are cool and interesting people, too, our radio station, clubs...).
I don't drink or smoke, but I still have a great social life. My friends and I find different ways of having fun. The only downside to not drinking is that a few people still view me as a school-obsessed good girl, but I've never spoken to those people before, so I don't really care what they think.
Although I do like HS, I REALLY hope that college is even better. I'm really looking forward to the freedom. My parents are very strict. My Model UN trip was BLISS because I had control over what I wanted to do.
Anyway... yeah.
