honestly what are my chances for getting into ANY college?

As I was lackadaisical in my attitude toward my studies throughout high school my chances of getting into a good university are slim to none. Without diverging on a tangent, issues such as trying to help a struggling friend with his cocaine addiction, family divorce, and mono during my junior year contributed to my rather poor credentials for college applications. Now that I have turned over a new leaf, i feel that I am ready to tackle the challenges of the college environment. However, I fear that my poor track record will prevent me from attending a good school within Texas or elsewere. Eyes set on either A&M or UT, it will be a dream come true if I am granted admission to either school. How badly will my horrible class rank affect my chances? What are my chances to get into both universities? Furthermore what universities should I look into applying to for out of state?

The best place to address the mono issue would be in the guidance counselor rec letter. Talk to you guidance counselor and see if he/she is willing to include that info in the letter. If that is not going to work there are 2 places on the common app that you can address it yourself. The first is , I believe , under the heading of Education. There is a question about having to take a leave of absence for any reason. While I understand that you did not do this, if you check this box you can upload a document to explain the circumstances. The other place to address this is in the essays section. There is a place to upload a document with any “Additional Information”. I think it is better to save that area to upload a detailed resume. Good Luck!
As far as chances, I have no idea. Just make sure your final list includes a range of schools with varying selectivity and you should be fine.

dude, you’re joking right…

you can get into a lot of colleges with those grades and EC’s.

You will obviously get into college. I don’t know about Texas schools, but your class rank isn’t even horrible. Don’t worry.

Calculate a GPA without the junior year, and either have the GC include it in his/her letter or include an explanation of your JR performance in your application.

I certainly don’t think all is lost.

My understanding is A&M is nearly as tough as UT in emphasizing class rank. You may have to start at a directional U like UNT and think about transferring after 2 years.
