Honors College Class of 2018

I just received notice that I have been accepted into the Honors College, was wondering if there are others who have been accepted. Would you mind providing GPA and ACT/SAT?

And is it worthwhile to participate in the program?

I was accepted last year, I’m currently a freshman here. I had a 4.1 GPA and a 29 ACT. I heard this year for the pool of applicants for the 2014-2015 school year that the average ACT was around 32.7.

Personally, I love being in the Honors program. It has given me so many benefits. When you’re an Honors student, you get priority class registration (but not for your first fall semester), which means you have a way better chance of getting into classes that typically fill up fast. You can live in Honors housing, too, so you’re given priority for dorms like Turner Hall, or the Honors building in Stratford and the Honors floor in Daniels (which, if they do the same thing this year, you also get to self-assign your room for housing before any other incoming freshmen do). Living in Honors housing and being in the program I feel created a sort of small community for me. Going to such a huge university with tons of people, it can feel like it’s difficult to meet people. Being in the Honors program has been a way to kind of make the huge university a little smaller, because I know I always have a small community of people I have things in common with to go back to.

There aren’t many requirements to stay in the Honors program, either. Your freshman year, you have to maintain at least a 3.2 GPA, take a Gateway to University Honors class (it’s very easy), have an ‘Honors experience’, and create an online ‘portfolio’ that you just have to update regularly. By the time you graduate, you must have a 3.4 GPA and 5 Honors experiences, but it’s not difficult. Honors experiences are very easy to get - they have pre-approved Honors ‘seminars’, which are just interesting classes on different topics (some of which have study abroad components), pre-approved experiential learning experiences (research, special volunteering trips, etc.), and self-designed experiences. You aren’t required to take any difficult Honors courses, like Honors organic chemistry or Honors physics or anything like that, but they do offer them as seminars if you choose to do that for your experiences.

Honestly, I think being in the program is a great experience. In my experience, it holds you to a standard so you don’t have grade slip-ups, and it encourages you to get involved in the UC community. I made a lot of friends that I still have today going on an Honors retreat before the school year started, and in my Honors classes. It’s worthwhile, and it doesn’t require an unrealistic amount of work!

My D was accepted to Honors as well. ACT 30, GPA 4.4 (weighted), GPA 3.9 (unweighted).

finngal,

Congratulations on your daughters admission to Honors. Did she receive notice of eligibility of Cincinnatus Scholarship?

Thank you rlpak14. She was invited to apply for the Darwin T. Turner Scholarship, but we will not hear on that until the end of March.

I don’t believe she received notice regarding Cincinnatus. Do you know when those go out? I thought she should be eligible for Cincinnatus, but didn’t know the timing on that.

Correction - she is eligible for the Cincinnatus.

My son is going into the Honors program but will also be a varsity athlete, which seems a little scary. We’ve read and heard good things about it though, so he’s going to give it a shot. If it becomes too much with the athletic commitment, he may have a choice to make. Since he’s on scholarship (athletic and academic), the Honors would probably be sacrificed first because it’s not tied to any of his scholarship money.

My daughter is also going into the Honors program as a BFA Dramatic Performance student. I feel the same way FaninTheStands. Does anyone know when to expect decisions on the Cincinnatus? I know the letter said mid-March. We were told not to give our decision to the school until all scholarship packages were announced. Did others hear the same thing?

I was told mid-March for financial aid and scholarships as well. We weren’t told to wait on giving our school until then, but we wait to do so either way. We want to have all of the information in hand before making any decision.

Thank you finngal! Just what I was waiting to hear…sigh of relief.

UC is pretty good about getting back to you when they say they will. I was told mid-March last year, and I received my scholarship info around mid to late March!

@puma69 - I emailed financial aid today because they didn’t seem to have our FASFA. They responded and said that financial aid, as well as scholarship aid would go out mid-March.

Finngal, thanks so much for posting and sharing the information! And alanahlovee, may I ask where you decided to live freshman year?

My son has lived in the Honors Dorm (Turner) for 4 years and LOVES it. It just has a more serious type of student. He has never been disturbed by noisy parties or kids coming in late, obnoxiously drunk.

Great to know, Momannoyed! My daughter likes her quiet and not a late night gal at all. (Unless its a rehearsal) Thanks for the info!

I’m going to decline my admission soon (not completely sure how yet) but I got accepted with a 3.8 GPA (unweighted) and 31 ACT (33 superscore)

Puma69, I decided to live in - and currently live in - Turner Hall honors housing! I absolutely love it and can’t imagine living in another dorm. It’s quiet when needed and social when you make the effort to go out and meet people, too! :)

Accepted to the honors program for mechanical engineering with 35 ACT and 4.06 GPA. Still waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt, but if they deny me, I’ll probably be headed to UC this fall.
