Is it required for the Students at Clemson in the honors college to live in the honors dorm? I know that they have an honors dorm, but if, for some reason, I don’t want to live in it, can I live somewhere else? It says on the website that the students have the option, but it does not mention whether or not it is a requirement. I have not heard back from the Honors college or anything like that, I am just trying to gather information about what would be required.
Unless something has changed, it has NOT been a requirement. You can indicated your preference at the time you enroll. While honors does host a number of group get togethers for all honors students each year, living in honors housing freshman year is one key way in how people get connected within the honors community. Plus, the honors dorm is located in a very central and convenient location on campus. Go Tigers!
We know people who do and my that is my daugher’s first choice for housing. Our friend’s son who does not live in Core wishes he did and he hangs there most of the time. Good luck with your decision!
I’d encourage anybody considering foregoing living in Core to see it, spend some time there before passing on the opportunity. I have yet to see comparable housing options at any University, and we have travelled far and wide. Brand new suites with four students sharing a bathroom. Common areas have stunning views of Death Valley. Breathtaking!
@RelocatedYankee We’ve seen them and they are really great, however, they are considerably more expensive. I’m trying to gain an understanding of value for your dollar to see if it is worth it for us. I’d love to hear from anyone who lives there or from an honors student who chose to live nearby in Holmes or McCabe. My son actually liked the room in McCabe we saw better since it was larger and didn’t have the odd dark entryway that the honors dorms have.
In addition, the wifi has not been good in the honor dorms this year. I presume they will fix that, however, that would be difficult to live with and again, for what you pay to live there, I think you’d want reliable wifi.
My freshman(not in honors college) lives in rise community for Engineering,Byrnes Hall, right now and he wishes he would have picked Holmes or McCabe to be on that side of campus, mainly for the better dining hall! My rising college freshman who has been accepted to honors college will live in Core if he decides to go to Clemson.
I really like the honors kids. We have a lot in common, and I know that I will be the most comfortable in the Honors Dorms just because I will genuinely like the people that I am staying with. At this point, I will most likely live in them. They are more expensive, but my parents care more about me enjoying my experience and being around like-minded people than they are about saving some money. They are actually wanting me to live there despite them being more expensive.
@thatpreppygirl With the applicant pool that’s been accepted to Clemson over the past several years, you’ll be with like minded students no matter where you live. Sometimes it’s not about saving money, but cutting corners to actually be able to attend Clemson in the first place. That’s great that you have that option, not all that have been accepted do, especially OOS students. I do understand that the Core is very nice though . If my son would’ve chosen Calhoun Honors last year he would’ve stayed there.
Holmes and McCabe are nice. Suite style and right across the street from Core. @preppygirl We may very well pay for the honors dorms but Im trying to get first hand thoughts to see if it’s is worth the dollar to live there to my student. I have heard the atmosphere is more studious than other dorms. However, there are lots of students at Clemson who are working hard to keep scholarships so maybe you just have to find your study spot. Some students may really care about having food in their building, others may like a walk to meals. As one student told us, the wifi has been spotty this year. Hard to pay that much when you can’t get good wifi at a university. If we can get a great experience paying less, then we’d like to know. If there are plenty of things to justify the cost, then that’s great to know too!
@kah I have heard that many engineering students, honors and non, choose to live in the Living Learning community in the high rises. They have tutors available most nights of the weeks and study groups for specific classes. There is the likemindedness that is important to those majors. Lots to consider.
My daughter loves living in the Honors dorm. It is not a requirement. Some of her Honors peers live in the Living and Learning community and like that too. The only thing she complains about is the food.
Sorry so long to reply… Most importantly… Serious students. No partiers… At least from what she sees. Brand spanking new. Close to everything. She loves it. She did a “potluck” for a room mate… Great fit. Next year she bid for a single room and got it. But she would have been happy with a room mate.
