RISE Program vs Calhoun Honors College

Hey all, looking for info.

I've been offered both the RISE Program as well as Calhoun Honors College.

So I have some questions.

RISE is men and women, right?

I have to live in Lever to be in RISE, right?

Feedback on either program, as well as the dorms they are in?

My son had to make this decision a few years ago. He chose to live in Holmes (Honors dorm) because it was nicer (suite style rather than one bathroom for the whole floor) and he liked the idea of living with some people who were not engineers. There were plenty of engineers in Holmes which was good for study groups, etc. but some of his best friends were in other majors. It was more interesting to him.

Interesting. Lever was refinished this summer for RISE, but it is still a hall style I believe.

Tigerin13, in previous years RISE was in the shoeboxes with a male dorm (Sanders) and a female dorm (Young). They’ve had to turn away people in the past so this year Lever will be a dorm for the RISE program only (probably holds 400 students). It will be co-ed (probably by floor since they have communal bathrooms). So yes if you live in Lever, you will be in the RISE program (Byrnes is another high rise dorm that is co-ed and for all incoming students)

If you’re in Honors there’s a good chance (I assume) that you won’t need the mentoring and tutoring programs that they offer in RISE so I would live in the Honors dorm. That’s just my opinion - I don’t think there’s really a bad choice here. Holmes is definitely the nicer dorm though (suite style living with a bathroom for every 4 people instead of communal bathrooms)

I’ve heard many people say how they love hall style because of all the people they meet. The two of you seem to think that the comfort of a suite is better?

Appreciate the thoughts so far!

It really depends what you want from your freshman housing experience. It’s definitely true that you’ll meet more people in a typical residence hall as opposed to suites. There are definitely many ways to meet people at college so you’ll have to figure that out. I lived in an apartment my freshman year and I definitely missed the “freshman experience” but I loved getting a kitchen, bathroom for only 4 people etc…

Hm. I definitely think comfort is a big advantage, as well as meeting many new people.

There’s no problem meeting people in Holmes. They have lots of programmimg and because everyone is in Honors, people have things in common including lots of classes. My son said there were lots of social and academic activities there. I know he made many friends in Holmes and they’re still friends even though they’ve now graduated. (He’s gone to some weddings of people who met in Holmes!)

Another thing he suggested if you want to meet people and you’re in Honors is to participate in the Eureka research program this summer. He didn’t and he regretted it.
