Honors College LSA Anyone

Can you only hear of merit-based scholarships once you accept their admission? I applied a while ago and I received something about a scholarship, but it indicated financial need was involved (of which i have none). Do i actually have to tell uMich i'm going there before i can hear about merit-based aid?

No commitment is needed; my son got a modest merit scholarship from one of the departments just a couple of weeks after his letter of acceptance from LSA.

Huh. wonder why i didnt get one of those :-(

I got a $9000 Award of Excellence scholarship. So far, its more expensive than U of Chicago for me, so unless I get a free ride or something Michigan won't be seeing me next fall.

Dressage, how is Michigan at $37,000 minus $9000 more expensive than Chicago? Did Chicago give you financial aid, but UM does not meet it?

Dressagechick, you must have neglected to say that Chicago gave you at least $14,000 in aid. Otheriwse, Michigan would be cheaper for you.

I know this is kind of off subject, but this is supposed to be an honors thread. Is it cool if i apply for honors just to get into South Quad and then ditch the program and keep my nice dorm?

lol why would you ditch the program?

I got in, got the bottle, got the award of excellence thing (up to 12000 or something depending on need) but unless they give me more merit money i cant go.

There are quite a few reasons to ditch the program from what I've heard. Basically I hear it's just a bunch of extra work for nothing. Someone posted on here a month or so ago telling his experience with the program and i thought it was very helpful giving an inside perspective. It turns out you can just take honors classes within your major and be fine, so I wasn't sure if i wanted to do the program or not.

does u mcih give presidential scholarships?? or do they not need to lol

does u mcih give presidential scholarships?? or do they not need to lol

My app was complete on Jan.15, I got accepted Feb.15, (out of state), but when I call them with questions about Merit scholarships and Honors program, why are they telling me it takes 6 weeks from acceptance. Everyone here seems to have heard back pretty soon after acceptance.

I have excellent stats. Is that a bad thing?

My S was accepted around Jan 28. We have also heard nothing on merit and he had excellent stats as well. I am as confused as you are. When I called, they said it could be 6-8 weeks until we hear anything (or nothing).

After acceptance, it took 2 weeks to hear about residential college, 4 weeks to get honor's info...

When i checked online, it seemed as though there were almost no scholarships/aid available with merit as its sole criterion. Sorry about the apparent bad news (I might have misinterpreted what I saw or missed many scholarships) but I'm just as bummed as you guys about it.

bearsfan,

as posted previously (but I guess now buried in the archives), there are a number of merit scholarships, LSA gives out 70 15k/yr:

Their website's a little confusing because some scholarships are sponsored by the University, some by the individual colleges, and they are documented in several locations. Search around, or try:

However, somewhere in there it says for best consideration apply early; they may have made all their offers already. I don't know if they make additional offers if their "yield" is under expected.

I just lost interest in UM......

me too... better offers have come, including a school where all four years will be barely 10,000 combined.... so thats what im thinking now. ill wait till grad school for an expensive school.

Well I'll call just to see about that LSA scholarship, thanks for pointing that out. I guess that's what I'm after. I did apply back in like October/November and was accepted in November, so I don't think I turned it in too late for consideration. I figure there aren't too many people admitted to the honors college, and based on the stats i saw, i was above average for it, and i have pretty good EC's, so maybe I'm in the top 70???? Well i sure hope so. Thanks for the info guys.

hey...when do we get our notification for honors lsa? i just received my umich application, but have not yet received anything about honors lsa.

You can email them asking for them to consider it and it might go faster (that's what I did) and they had told me within a month of when i got accepted. And as for scholarships, I got stuff in the mail about the Award of Excellence Scholarship you guys are talking about but when my award notice came out via email I didn't get it. Does this mean I didn't get the LSA award either?
