so i was surprised and thrilled to be admitted today. was not very confident since i am OOS. anyway, can anyone tell me about the Honors program? was I supposed to apply for it? have they already invited the Honors folks? i am just thinking that maybe as an OOS admit i might have a chance at Honors? but did i forget to check a box somewhere?

i would appreciate any details.

i hadn't really thought about it bc i didn't expect this.

They consider all students for the honors program by their application and they should be sending out emails and letters in the next few weeks if you are invited to join it. There is no separate application.

My OOS son was not invited to the Honors program during the Admisssions process, which surprised us, since he was invited at other comparable schools. But he went to UNC anyway, and applied to the Honors program after his first semester and got into it. So don’t worry, or be insulted, if you don’t get invited as an applicant - the Honors committee has their own criteria and are obviously choosing from amongst a very high-achieving group of people. As far as I can tell, the main benefit to being in the Honors program is priority registration for Honors classes. On the other hand, it is somewhat restricting since you are required to take a minimum number of Honors classes, and there is not always a huge selection in every area; the consequence is that many students opt out of Honors in order to fulfill their other requirements.

thanks for the info everyone! and don’t worry, I wasn’t insulted at all, i was more worried that I had missed out on an opportunity because of an oversight on my part. towards the end of 14 applications, i got a little bleary eyed. ;-)

mswnola brings up a good point… there are several CC posters who entered the honors program after enrolling…also once you get to junior status it often become difficult to find enough honors classes within your major to remain in the program…it’s even more difficult if you are double majoring.

It’s also important to note that being in the honors program does not mean that you will graduate “with honors”…that requires writing a thesis and anyone can do that. Without writing the thesis you can graduate “with distinction” and “with highest distinction” based on your in class performance.

^ They offer a Junior seminar option where you can take a one-credit hour course each semester to fulfill your requirements. You can also tack on an honors-attribute to any course for your major with the right paperwork and an additional honors project for that course. But yeah, I agree, it can be tough to stay in the program as an upperclassman. They’re working on it though.

I’m from Florida, and am ecstatic that I got admitted to UNC, although I’m still a bit surprised. Can someone explain what the Honors program actually is?
