I just got a brochure saying I'm being considered for the Honors Program and the brochure talks about Honors Housing.

"About 80% of entering Honors students choose Honors Housing in their first year, and 25-30% of those students return to the Honors Housing in the second year"

That scared me. So a huge majority do it their first year, and then most of them hate it or what? My concern about the honors housing is that it seperates you from everyone else and you are sort of isolated from the rest of the University. Also, how is the social life in the honors housing? I'm guessing it's going to be pretty dry(read no alcohol)/boring and very intense/competitive environment.

If anyone can comment on the honors housing that'd be awesome.

Not really intense/competitive. It's pretty laid back. Social life varies. It gets boring at times, but sometimes things can get out of hand, especially at night during the weekends. If you're bored, you can go up a floor or two, which is what I do. You can always look for stuff going on if you know people living in other places. Honors Housing for us this year is the third and fourth floors of the dorm called South Quad, which is probably the best dorm on central campus. It's a nice place and has a great location to probably all your classes. Some people choose honors housing just to be in South Quad. Trust me, many will envy you for living there. I can't say I LIKE the food, but that, too, is considered best on central campus. I think next year, honors housing will be the first four floors. The reason many people don't return is that honors housing is mainly for freshman. Many people decide to move out to apartments or houses with their friends or find another non-honors room in South Quad. They don't necessarily hate it; they might just want to try new things. If you can get alcohol, just don't get caught with any. Simple as that. People do have it around here. Honors housing a good choice because many people take similar classes. Talented student body. Of course you have the nerds here, but not everybody is one. Check it out.

Why does everyone seem to think only the 3rd and fourth floors are honors? 1st and 2nd Fred (half of the first two floors) are also honors. Poor Fred kids. Anyways, all those people move elsewhere because it's understood that honors housing is mainly meant for freshmen and you don't want to be one of 5 sophomores in an honors hall. So many, like me, just move up a couple floors in south quad for the next year so they can be with students more their own age, honors housing is by no means bad. It's probably the best experience for an honors freshman.

Yeah, that percentage isn't a reflection of the quality of honors housing, but more a reflection of the fact that many UM students do not remain in university housing after the 1st year.
