Honors housing

I was recently accepted for Honors. I’ve seen the posts by Maryversity and Astrophysicsmom about how I should sign up for housing as soon as possible, but I’m a little confused. I’m not certain I’ll be going to UMD since I’m still waiting to hear back from several schools.

Do I still sign up for housing now? And if so, how would I get out of the agreement if I decide later in April not to attend?
Also, there doesn’t appear to be an option for Honors housing on the application. Is honors housing decided after I submit this first form?

Yes, sign up now. You can withdraw later (just don’t forget)

Is a deposit required to sign up for housing? Does signing up as early get the student into a more favorable position in the housing queue? My son isn’t decided on which school either. We had the same question about Honors housing. Thanks.

It should say if a deposit is required. Two years ago it wasn’t, so I’m guessing it’s the same. Yes, signing up earlier gets you in a better position in the housing queue from what I understand. The earlier you sign up, the less chance of being put in a triple or quad. Doesn’t matter if you’re in honors, scholars or regular admit - any student can get put in a triple or quad. My neighbor was put in a quad for UHonors her freshman year. She called to inquire why she was not in a double and was told it was because she signed up for housing late ( as in the week before May 1).

@hummingb, Thanks for the quick response.

@Putterer No problem. Good luck with your son’s decision and congrats to him for getting into honors.

@SaltySpitoon honors housing is based off of which honors program you get placed into. You can still fill out the form now.

Thanks, @hummingb . BTW, we went through the Housing and Dining app and there isn’t a deposit but you seem to sign off on paying a fee if you fail to cancel and don’t follow through on housing–can’t remember the deadline for cancelling without incurring a penalty.

Thank you, @hummingb! Your advice was spot on; I also emailed the Residential Life office and they told me the exact same things.
@Putterer, the date is May 1.
