honors housing

my son has been invited into the honors program but is waiting to make his decision until after the results from his other applications come in (april)--will it be a problem to apply for honors housing then? Is there anyway to secure housing in advance? Is the honors housing is a good location on campus and is it preferable in some way than general housing? thanks in advance!

honors housing is in south quad-which generally receives good reviews, BUT assuming a large freshman class, honors housing usually fills pretty quickly. Thus, your son, should he decide to matriculate at UM, submit his housing app ASAP.

I am not an Honors Student but I have seen a lot of South Quad (friends there etc) its a great dorm, great living experience for Honors Students and very good food considering its size. He has nothing to lose by sending it in. If he decides not to go the spot will simply just go to another Honors kid. The location of South Q is great right near the Union and 3 minutes from the Diag, much closer than the dorms on the Hill. Honors housing is simply 2 floors of the huge dorm, same rooms just designated honors.

thank you for your response! So, south Quad is not overwhelmingly big I guess. What do you think of Alice Lloyd Hall? Which would be preferable?

Soth quad is a pretty big big dorm....it has 11 floors and is one of the bulidings you can see walking back from the big house. Lloyd is fairly far away (on the far side of the hill). I personally think east quad has the best location, but that's just my bias :)

Honors is more than just a housing option - there are academic requirements that go along with this decision. So you need to check this out and see if the academic program is what you're looking for. South Quad is one of the best dorms on campus. Very close to center of campus and generally in good condition. Not to mention that a good part of its residents are Honors students so it's not quite the party dorm as say Markley is. Alice Lloyd is also a nice dorm. Tends to have the largest rooms. You cannot request Alice Lloyd as a freshman, however. But you can apply for the Michigan Learning Community that's located in Lloyd. It's called Lloyd Hall Scholars. If the academic program for Honors is OK by you, I'd go that route - and I'd get my housing appl in sooner rather than later.
