Can someone tell me about the UF Honors program? Is it worth applying to? What benefits will it offer me if I get in?

That’s a long conversation. :)

Review the website, and read through the Philosophy behind the program, and then let us know what other questions you may have.

Joining the Honors Program, however, indicates a willingness to fully engage in the academic life of the university. Our students strive to take full advantage of all the opportunities available at this world-class research university. They are not content merely to go to class, write their papers, and ace their exams; they push themselves to learn and experience all they can. To do less is to leave unrealized the vast potential that lies within.

A lot of folks DON"T want this, they just want to go to class, write those papers and ace their exams (I know I did…especially acing more of those exams…!) However, if you want to get more engaged with the school/campus, then honors can help make that happen. It’s for those that want to do the “extra”.

…and with all that being said, being able to register for classes early is awesome, even if that’s the only reason you join honors for the first 2 years…

Good Luck!

Should I appeal for the UF honors program if I missed the SAT cutoff by 20 points? The cutoff was 2070, I got a 2050. I totally meet the GPA requirement, since I have above a 4.0.

If you want in? Sure. Don’t think of it as an appeal, but an application; with your stats, and a few solid essays, I’m sure you’ll get in.

NOTE: The essays are reviewed (and scored) by current honor students, so they are looking for reasons to let you in and not keep anyone out…

Thanks for the link @Gator88NE

Can anyone comment on living in Hume? Is it worth it or would I be better off in one of the typical, social “freshmen dorms”?

@Gator88NE Thanks! You really are helpful! I’ll do the application then, since UF Honors seems to be worth it. I’ll try to put in as much effort as I can for the essays.

@arrozconleche Don’t kill yourself over these essays! Spend a few hours working on them, put them aside for a day, and then review them one last time before submitting.

@Gator88NE I wasn’t going to I just meant that I was going to put in more effort, since I didn’t put in much effort into my UF essay.
