I applied to the College of Biological Sciences and I got accepted into the honors program. Is this even competitive? What percent are accepted into this? I honestly know nothing about the U of M, I only applied because of in-state tuition/safety.
Here you can see the middle 50% of admitted freshmen last year.

looks very competitive. Congrats!
@Banker1 Thank you!
Very competitive - hard to get into. Most accepted to CBS will not be invited directly and will need to apply after freshman year if they want to be part of the program. You might want to read about the honors program because it’s really reserved for a select group of students - which is saying a lot given that the university is pretty selective already. You have access to some great resources such as special classes, advisors, etc.
Congrats and good luck with your decision!
I would agree that it’s very competitive. My D18 was admitted earlier this fall to CBS, but has NOT been accepted into the honors college or given scholarship money (we do live in a nearby state so she gets instate tuition.) She has an unweighted GPA of 3.98 and a 33 on her ACT.
She has been accepted into honors at two other Big10 universities (with lots of scholarships at both) and also to 'Bama with a Presidential scholarship. She was also accepted Restricted Early Action at University of Notre Dame. Go figure!
Also, I’m wondering whether there are any advantages to stay at Middlebrook?
@LaikaDoodles - if my D17 attends UMN she will most likely stay in Middlebrook. She wants peace and quiet in her dorm and isn’t looking to be in the Superblock.
I’ve spoken to parents I know whose kids have stayed in the honors LLC and they loved it. While Middlebrook gets a reputation for being “away from all the fun”, in reality it’s a short trip over the bridge to the heart of the campus or to Dinkytown anytime you want. If sleep and study dictate your dorm preference, Middlebrook might be for you.
There is also a Biology LLC in Frontier (Superblock).
Lots of great choices. Hope that helps!
I got a call from an admission’s officer (I think?) and she said about 12% of students admitted to CBS were admitted into Honors (in case anyone is wondering).
@LaikaDoodles that’s pretty selective, given that admission to CBS is already a very competitive process. Thanks for sharing!
I’ll need to ask my D if she’s received a call from Carlson or Admissions lately.
^Do you know if it’s 12% from Carlson also?
@MYOS1634 the admissions person who called here told us that it was around top 10%. Guessing 10-15% for any of the colleges is about what they are targeting.
Thanks!
DD (OOS) attended Honors Showcase on Friday. People were delightful and friendly. But a few aspects (e.g., speaker remarks; participation and conversation regarding mock class) caused concerns that the program may not be as rigorous as she would like. Would love to get perspective from other students/parents who are looking for classroom challenges in addition to all of the other benefits offered by U of M. DD interested in Inter-College Program. Would appreciate any perspectives on that, also.
