Honors Program

Hi there~ I was accepted to GWU’s Honors Program as a rising freshman. Can anybody speak to whether this program is worth doing? (The advantages to the program, the quality of the classes, etc.) I ask because I know there are two year-long required classes, and I am trying to see if it is worth taking those required classes or choosing my own. Thanks!

@lunamir My daughter is a freshman at GWU and was admitted to the Honors Program. A few weeks ago, GWU Honors lowered the required GPA to graduate with Latin Honors. The GPA was 3.4. It is now 3.0. Freshmans must complete their year with a 3.0 to remain in the program. The Honors Program courses seem to be front loaded which means while other students who aren’t in the program may be able to slowly move into their major courses, Honors students hit the ground running…not much time for transition from high school. Here’s what you have to remember, 125 students are chosen from the incoming freshman class. The balance of the class may not be Honors students but the majority of those students go on to do great things in their lifetime. Yes, the Honors Program provides many opportunities to students but make sure you consider the stress of it.

@lunamir I have no experience, but I went with my son to the admitted students program and this is what I came away with: Most of the classes will fulfill a requirement you would have to do otherwise, like one of the first year classes fulfills the University Writing requirement. The same is true of many of the other Honors classes. The Honors program students get to register for classes before even Seniors do, and that is a huge advantage. Also, the program has two dedicated advisers who can do all of your academic advising. They seemed quite competent and much more available and knowledgeable than typical advisers. All-in-all, it seemed like an excellent program to me. Also, the students we talked with all seemed to love the program.
