Honors Program?

waiting for honors is killing me! do you think they'll go past the "end of march" deadline? because they did not stick to their "10-weeks-and-you'll-get-your-admissions-decision" in my case. it took them like 11ish weeks.

I got my financial aid package today, which was nice.

I'm still hoping for honors college. ^_^ Anybody get any letters recently?

I got my honors letter months ago. Maybe a few weeks after receiving my acceptance letter. And I got my financial aid stuff like yesterday. Okay but I got rejected from everywhere else I applied today (all small private colleges), and so I drove up to the U of MN to talk to my brother who is a freshman in CLA honors. He told me all this crazy stuff about the honors program. He knew a kid who got rejected from IT honors but went to MIT instead! He also said that it's like way harder to get into Carlson and IT honors than some of the other ones. I applied to CLA because I really had no idea of what I wanted to do for a major, but now I'm thinking about doing something in CFANS. My bro said that if I transfer to CFANS honors, I might get more scholarship money!!! Definitely something I'm going to think about.

Ok, sadly I think I didn't get into CBS Honors. I called the admissions office and they said honors went out with scholarships, and I got my scholarship letter yesterday, but no honors. So even though I'm kind of in shock right now.....I guess I'll deal with it.

I'm still waiting :(

When you go to the MyU from "One Stop" and click on "My Colleges" does it list Honors along with your regular undergraduate college? It shows up with IT for our daughter but she hasn't received any info from the Honors program so we don't know if she's one of those that should have been advised and wasn't or if there is some other explanation (both in Lind or always with IT or something else). We thought she would be qualified for honors at U of M (she was at Purdue Engineering and other colleges she applied to) but she didn't get anything when she got her scholarship info.

I understand that the "quality" of the applicants offered admission in engineering was very high this year (based on comments at the Dean's gathering a few weeks ago) so maybe they're waiting longer to see how many accept?

^
Odd...I don't even see IT in my college section. Did you already pay the enrollment fee or something?

IT and Honors were present under "My Colleges" before enrollment fee was paid.

I just recieved some scholarship money today, still haven’t heard about honors. I kind of assumed I wouldn’t be accepted

I didn’t got into the Honors College. My SAT score is around 2150. My ECs are very strong, especially in leadership and team qualities but my high school transcripts are average. Some scores were weak because there were some special circumstances. I am extremely disappointed that I didn’t get in.

I have kind of an opposite situation to you
I had really good EC’s and I’m first in my class with excellent grades, however i didnt take the SAT too seriously and i got 2000 and never re-took it. i kinda took it for granted and i guess its my SAT score that didn’t get me into honors.
my teachers actually laughed at me and thought i was joking when i said i didnt get in :(

Arghhh, I have sparkly’s situation. Didn’t get into Honors, very surprised
although that story of the guy who got rejected from IT honors and went to some really good school does make me feel better. I have pretty good ECs and scores, but there are some grades on my transcript cough FROM THE U cough that brought down my GPA cough philosophy cough

My parents thought I was joking when I told them I didn’t get in. Bah

yeah, i think there must be something up with the way they determine who gets into honors and who doesn’t. is there anyone here that DID get into CBS honors? I know plenty of people with stats below mine who got into CLA honors easily - it obviously differs for each college.

maybe we all needed 2300+ for CBS honors haha.

Norabelle, I did. But I had a 2300+ SAT score. I think it’s crazy that more people from here didn’t get in, having looked at everybody’s stats.

haha see my theory has some support! lol congrats though! i mean if they hadn’t accepted you either we all would’ve been like, okay
WHAT is going on?!

Not sure what percentage of the freshman class make up the Honors program or whether it varies by school. I vaguely recall last spring (2008) they had said around 5% of the accepted students are offered Honors. Anyway, I suspect as many of the accepted students on the honors program decide to join other schools and notify the U, more and more slots would open up on the Honors program. Of couse it will help only those who accepted the U’s offer even if without Honors.

By the way does it mean 5 (or whatever) percentage of the U’s intake are students with 2300+ on SAT ? Wow !! I am glad I took ACT and stayed away from SAT after taking practice tests at home. There is no way I would have scored even 2100 on SAT. ACT was so much easier to score.

I am in CBS and University Honors (I am not sure if that means that CBS Honors
is there a separate honors program for CBS?).

i just noticed how many posts you have tokenadult

@TheKiwi - the whole 2300 SAT thing was just a theory/slight exaggeration. im sure there are people who got into honors and didn’t necessarily have 2300’s.

@Stewie32 - University Honors is just the name of the honors program in general, but techincally you can just say the name of the college you got into and say “honors” after it, hence you’re in CBS honors
congrats!

Not to pick nits, but that is technically not true about honors. There is only one honors program, University Honors, and not distinct programs in each college. There were programs in each college up until last year, but they all merged into one, University Honors.
