Honors / Provost

Rising senior that wants UCF-BHC. 4.6 recalculated GPA. 3.96 ish unweighted. Only B in 8th grade Algebra. 14 AP/AICE and 4 dual by graduation. 1420 SAT. Multiple faculty selected academic awards for outstanding performance in AP classes. Good leadership, work experience and EC. Will the 1420 SAT be high enough for BHC and Provost if he applies early, Aug/Sep? Feeling like it’s iffy and right on the line. @JimDadinmia any idea? You seem to know A LOT!

I can’t really give you much input on the Honors College, and I’m not sure anyone else can either. The best option is to call the Honors College directly. I have not dealt with BHC, but if they are anything like the rest of the admissions folks, they will be very helpful.

This is finals week at UCF, but I would call anyway. If you wait, you may hit people taking the summer off.

If you are in-state, your son is going to get 100% Bright Futures – regardless of any other financial aid/pre-paid, etc he may have. Bright Futures is literally money in the bank that can be used for anything.

On the weighted GPA calculation, be aware that UCF only uses core courses required for HS graduation by the State of Florida. So lots of electives will not help his weighted GPA as far as UCF is concerned.

On the application date, I would apply as soon as he has everything needed to apply. Also, be aware that BHC is a separate application – additional to the regular UCF application.

I think your son is a cinch for regular acceptance, and applying as soon as he’s ready will at least give him a very good school acceptance early in the process. It will be both a comfort for everyone in a trying time period, and a bargaining chip for scholarships.

Yes, his recalculated gpa is 4.6. That is UCF recalculated. He is a top 10 knight so definitely will be admitted. Just really want honors for the ease of class registration.

At a UCF open house, they gave these stats for the 2020 class. I guess they don’t have the 2021 class. Based on that, I’d encourage your son to study and retake the SAT, if he doesn’t want to stress so much over getting Honors.

Average honors for incoming freshman

4.5
1460
33

Average for all incoming freshman

4.0
1325
29

I saw that. I wish they would tell us the middle 50%!

Is that average for all, or just for fall?

I don’t know. Those are just notes I took. He could still apply early and still retake the SAT. Honors applications come out mid-September I believe, and is separate from the regular application which opens in July or August. Study this summer and take the August SAT? Have results back by the time the Honors application open. Don’t send results until he sees them. Just a thought.

I know it’s been a few months but I took some time off from CC due to an insane school year for me.
Definitely apply early. My son had similar GPA stats although his SAT was 1480 and is part of the Honors college. He has had a great year and had many opportunities at UCF that he may not have had at other schools.
Remember that is the average so a 1420 is on the lower side but not terrible. I spoke to my son yesterday and he reminded me that UCF’s averages are high because there are many top Merit scholars that attend because of the free tuition and great engineering programs. This may skew the averages a little towards the high side.
I would send what you have now to get in and qualify for scholarships and take the SAT again if it increases it should be in for the Honors application.

What kind of opportunities did s21 have at UCF, that he might not have gotten elsewhere? If you don’t mind sharing specifics, that would be really helpful and appreciated. DC already accepted into Honors, for CS.

He is there for ME and hopes to work in the theme park industry. The clubs there have had many wonderful professional events geared to the theme park industry that would not be available in other parts of the country.

He also had positive experiences with the honors advisors. He has had no difficulty getting classes so far either, choosing a good mix of Honors and regular classes.

Getting involved is one of the best ways for them to be successful in college. Check out the CS clubs at the school. We found a tremendous amount of information that sparked my sons interest before attending.

Congrats to yours and good luck with making a decision.
